    Not sure about being a carpet knife, I would say a pruning knife, and other tools associated with grafting. A technique used to grow one type of plant on another type of rootstock or stem. You slip the bark on a tree and insert a bud or green stem of another.... blah blah blah, it grows and have an apple tree that produces 3 different kinds of apples etc.

    being the horticulture nut that i am i thought of something along those lines. we did small scale grafting in high school, but never used tools like that. i've been thinking all afternoon on what those could be but still can't put a pin in it. though you may be right. kinda makes sense i guess.
