There are haha. Not going to lie. There are some pretty hardcore rigs down there too though. Find a couple full exo'ed yotas and even a completely long traveled one.

No! I don't care what that one song says, rain is not a good thing. If it starts raining again to soon you're the first one I'm sacrificing to the sun gods to appease them. lol

Looking at the extended forecast, I'd say you're good for at least another two weeks, right around the time I'd be moving up.

The PacNW definitely seems like a great place to have a Toyota 4x4. I had mine up there for like a week in July but I couldn't explore much. I'm so stoked to meet up with you guys!

    New unless specifically stated otherwise.

Newegg is so good I can believe you haven't heard of them, and feel quite ridiculous needing to explain it. Among computer geeks, Newegg is the end-all-be-all.

In perspective, Resellerratings.com is more or less the consumer reports of online buying, with regular folk performing the ratings. It's been around for at least 12 years, gathering reviews as they come in.

Newegg has an elite rating with ResellerRatings.com, with a lifetime rating of 9.76/10 over 34,878 reviews.

As a comparison, Amazon.com has a rating of 6.92/10 over 2,299 reviews. Costco gets 7.5. HP gets 0.69. Dell gets 1.29.

Ztronics clocks in at 6.62/10 lifetime rating over 17 reviews.

The only thing inside the ESD bag should be the component, in this case the mobo.
The pink foam should sit underneath (and possibly on top of) the ESD bag, which should all be contained within the mobo box.
The shipper never opens that box, they simply surround that box with peanuts inside the outer shipping box.

from the sounds of it, the foam was where it should have been

There should be a sliver looking bag on the outside to create a faraday cage and a pink polyurethane bag inside of that to stop the component its self from creating a static charge. A ploy foam will suffice and should be inside the bag. This thing came inside the faraday cage and the poly bag on the outside.

They do have ESD bags that have a poly liner and the cage on the out side of a single bag. But this was not the case.

The component should be wrapped in something like this

then this should be placed into a bag like this

disclaimer, I'm somehow making everything sound like I'm pissed off and argumentative tonight, but really I'm not, so don't take me wrong.

Alright I know what you are talking about now. Newegg (or any shipper) doesn't package the mobo, so the mobo manufacturer is to blame

I've rarely seen things wrapped as you describe. Most everything looks like this

However, there's many ways to package and the standard for ESD packaging keeps changing. All the hard drives we get just come in the silver bags. Expansion cards and such sometimes come in hard plastic cases, sort of like this

In any case, I wouldn't be overly concerned. While there's a certain level needed to ensure a safe delivery, once you have it, it's pretty much OK. I haven't worried about the way I touch components since the late 90's, and I'm handling stacks of RAM, hard drives, video cards, etc, all day. Some of the guys I know do system builds with magnetic screwdrivers and those rigs work well beyond the time when a normal person would have hucked it in the trash.

yea, I used to be all paranoid with static discharge but after doing so many builds it just... doesn't seem to matter. I don't go around sliding my feet around in socks for 30 minutes before working on a comp, I do it on tile and ground myself to the case first... really all ya need.

Generally if your working on a PC ESD isn't too big of a worry. It all depends on the type of components that are installed on the CCA. I don't blame newegg.com for the bad packaging as I've given them much $$$$ since. I should have been more clear about that. Although that first picture you posted is only protected from outside forces but once that thing moves around inside that bag it WILL create a charge. If it has things that are highly susceptible to a charge it will damage it. This damage may not be noticed at first but will become more noticeable over time.

When I was working in the Philippines we used to always have problems getting our SATCOM working once in flight after about two or three hours. We learned that the decreased humidity and high temperature in flight was causing the part not to work because the CCA controlling the unit was always wrapped wrong. It would get microscopic damage on certain components. It would work just fine on the ground when the CCA was cool and dry but heat that bitch up and BAM your dead in the air. I spent endless hours on this gripe. Turned out some IT company in Canada sued them because they were only putting the cards in a grey bag. *Climbing off soap box*

    I'm just anal

Nah man that's a perfectly valid reason to be anal. Then again, components being used for something vital like that versus a home computer for Call of Duty and youtube... different expectations on handling is to be expected :)

That said, I agree with you, if the knowledge is out there on how to properly protect a product and it doesn't even cost much of anything to make it happen,it should be in practice.
