That's what I always thought the typical choices were for gears

Then would 4.56s gear you lower than stock with 33s? That seems like a pretty big difference

i think they're just a tad lower than stock. don't quote me on that though. there are gearing calculators online if you're interested. i can't remember the name though.

Well so far I found this link on another thread here:

    http://www.toyota.com/upfitters/pdfs/specs/2009TacomaProductSpecs.pdf

assuming the 2009 ratios apply to all 2nd gens, it looks like you were right John, the v6 being 3.73 (excluding the xrunner)

I also found this chart on TTORA: According to that, it looks like 4.27 would be ideal for our trucks with 33's, so I guess 4.10 or 4.56's would be the way to go for 33's on the v6

Somebody please let me know if I am missing something. I know almost nothing about gearing, so I'm just learning.

thanks for the help guys i knew i could count on you guys, so i think i will go with either the 4.10 or the 4.56. i dont plan on ever going up to 35s i really dont have a need for anything bigger than 285s. i do plan on going to a mid-travel set up in a yr or two but im not going to go up in tire size.

colin i saw you truck in toyota mag hahaha and i think im going to go with your suspension set up when i up grade

haha, that's awesome, i just got the email with the magazine in it. i had no idea they were doing a page on out trip.

4.10 sounds like it would be good for you. 4.56 if you have a lot of extra weight or some other form of resistance on your truck.

and if you go with icon you'll love it. go with the new 2.5 inch rears though. the 2.0s are great, but they aren't rebuildable like the 2.5s are, which makes it difficult for them to handle extra weight in the rear.

i actually just took a picture yesterday that i need to post. turned the upper bushing washer on my driver rear shock inside-out.....limit strap time.

yeah i'm with you man. I don't understand how people are getting that kind of mileage cause I'm nowhere close

Yeah I think if I was regearing I'd probably go 4.56 for a little better towing and performance offroad, but if you're not towing much I would think 4.10 would be what you want. Just my .02

Visiting my Dad over the weekend in Atlanta. Filled up part way there, 20.1 MPG.

Just under 1/2 a tank left, so far I've managed to get 254 miles out of it. Cruise control at 70 gets great MPG.
