Seems right to me. I get 21-23 on the hwy - stock with 31X10.5-15 Geolanders. Pulled a trailer from TX to MI and back and consistently saw 13-15 mpg during that trip.

I wonder if something's amiss with your rig. There's no way you empty should match my trailer-towing number.

Are you guys reporting over 20 mpg using the Scangauge, or are you actually burning a tank of gas and dividing by the miles your odometer gives?

Stop and go (city/ town) driving really drinks the fuel... and I am not blasting off from the stop. Pure highway cruising gets me 2-3 mpg more, but that is doing 65-70, with the AC running... that still is never more than 19 MPG on Ca gasoline, however.

I am about due for my 30,000 mile service, and new spark plugs may make a difference, yes?

Ultragauge shows mid 18's, calculated I'm pushing 20 mpg. I usually average 19.7 - 19.8 mpg mixed driving, mostly backroads and some highway to and from work. If I'm 100% highway I only get 17 mpg.

I changed plugs at 40k miles, no difference in MPG's. The old ones weren't in terrible condition though.

Good to know it's not just me seeing a difference with California gas. The only way mine will approach 20MPG in California is on long trips on two lane highways where the posted limit is 55MPH. I get between 19-21 depending on the elevation gain or loss. Once out of California I can drive 80MPH with AC on and I still get 18-21. Try driving 70 inside Cali and I drop down to 17-18 even on flat ground.

FWIW, until i got about 15k miles on my truck, my mileage was horrible (14-17 mpg). Now I get 17-21 consistently.

And as I mentioned before, if you have the stock tires (265/70/16 stock on TRD OR) your actual mileage and speed is approximately 3-4% too low, so your actual mileage would be lower than you think. I am not sure what the difference is on the other tacoma models.

For example:If you drove 300 miles (according to your truck odometer) on 15 gallons you would have acheived 20mpg, but in actuality, you have really only traveled about 290 miles on that tank or 19.3mpg.

I don't know if there is a standard the auto industry can be off and still be considered in spec. I do know that the odometer was off by about 5% in my other car (honda accord) and there was a class action which resulted in an increase in mileage on the warranty.

You sure about that? I had heard that the fed allows the speedo to be off by 5% but not the odometer and believe they run from a different source?

Just bought my truck and took it right away on a 1600 mile trip.
85-87 Octane Gas, in high heat (85-115) it averaged 21 MPG.

Durrr, you just derailed my theory on why I'm getting bad gas mileage right now. Hot as hell here, the power loss is noticable, but I guess good mileage can still be had. Guess if I could keep my foot out of it around here, that or it truly is the quality of gas.

You got that right. I just ran 3 tanks of 91 oct with no Ethynol. I was driving 70-80 MPH got 18.5 MPG. When using 93 oct with Ethynol ant 65 MPH I was geting 16.5. All illinois gas has that crap. In Wisconsin you can get 91 oct with no Ethynol. I even stoped to fillup I had driven 320+ miles and the gauge read about 1/8 tank left. I took 17.4 gal.

Yep... that is 'normal' or close to what I have experienced with all three of my 4WD automatic Tacomas ('01 3.4 V6, '05 4.0 V6, '10 4.0 V6)... although, I have never got 20 mpg or more in any of them... 19 point something was always the best.

As I said, I assume the odo is off too. It may have a different source. My experience with older cars is they are tied together.

Your assumption is incorrect, odo should be dead on, the speedo reads low with stock size tires.

California gas is the worst and their roads are horrible as well. I got 2-3 more mpg's going through Oregon & Washington than I do driving in California. California gas "might" burn cleaner, but you burn more of it so is it really better for the environment?

When I drive through Iowa, in some places there are pumps that have ethanol and some that don't, or at least there used to be. I avoided the ethanol-diluted gas like the plague for the same reason.

I had a Ford that was flex-fuel, meaning it could run on E85... they don't tell you that it lops 30% off your fuel economy...

I'm not lying or fibbing numbers. When my first few tanks were 20-22 I was surprised myself. But I've run the numbers, and tracked with Fuelly, it's right.

But it's also about the perfect scenario. I drive 80 miles round trip, keep the cruise control at 65ish, 40 miles in mostly no traffic. 40 miles home has 20-25 miles of stop and go. I keep the windows cracked just a bit and the back window opened. No AC. Right now I'm at 370 miles and my light just came on today. I'll drive home and fill up and it will take somewhere around 18.5-19 gallons. So 410/19 = 21.57

I just completed a my first semi-full fill up on a V6 Prerunner, TRF Off-road package, fully stock, with 36 PSI on tires. I traveled 370.5 miles on 17.5 gallons. That's 21.2 MPG. Averaged 70 MPH on highways, with 30% use on city streets. I replaced the air filter just after filling up. It was awefull, very dirty. I don't think a clean air filter will improve my MPG much cause it seems pretty "high" already. Will post update on next fill-up.

I just recently started getting over 20mpg once I took off my BESTOP. On my most recent 1700 mile trip I was averaging about 22mpg going through the mountains. I am curious to see what I get on my way back down on my next trip next week.

My average is about 20mpg, and given the 21.1 gallon tank, that puts our theoretical range on a tank of gas at 422 miles.

I have a road trip next weekend that Google says is 416 miles, all interstate highway. It would be fun to see if I could coast in on fumes, but... I'm not brave enough to try it ;)
