Hey guys, I noticed 3rd gen 4runners tend to suffer from the pink milkshake where the coolant lines from the radiator to the transmission fail and mix coolant and tranny fluid together causing damage to the transmission. Is this also common in 1st gen Tacomas as well? Since the 3rd gen 4runner and 1st gen Tacoma are related somewhat.

    getting there....
It can and does happen occasionally. You can install an aftermarket tyranny cooler and bypass the stock one in the radiator and you won't have to worry about the strawberry milkshake.

I have never heard of it happening on a Taco. But on t4r.org, we strongly recommend that ALL Auto transmission owners bypass the radiator with an external cooler.

Its built into the radiator. Its on all auto transmission drivelines.

Thanks, I did not know that.

I just looked it up and saw how it is set up.

Are tranny oil coolers really required? how come manuals don't have em? or just select fews?

You should do some more research on how they work, but Manual Transmission "fluid" is oil to lube things.
Automatic transmissions "fluid" is hydraulic fluid that is pumped around and gets to high pressure, which causes it to heat up. Cooling it down preserves it longer and prevents ruining your transmission (thanks previous owner to my truck who ruined my transmission).
