I have always viewed myself, and portrayed myself, as being Atheistic.

However, lately, I've been doing some reading on Agnosticism and I do agree with a lot of the ideals/theories (or lack thereof) that particular group has. I guess you could call me an Agnostic Atheist; I do not believe any deity exists, but I'm open-minded enough to realize that anything is possible?

I'm a skeptic in every sense of the word. Tell me you saw a ghost, and I will ask to come see it for myself; tell me you saw a UFO, and I will ask to see it for myself, etc...

I don't think so. I'm atheist. I don't see why the universe HAD to have been created by something but that something didn't HAVE to be created by something else. I don't think "nothing" has become a god for me, I'm perfectly content knowing there are questions we'll never answer. I don't see any reason to seek out human answers to those questions. My basic beliefs are "I don't know" not "God did it", to me that isn't a religious belief.

There is so much to read, and back and forth about this, it makes my head spin. Sure has been a lot of court rulings that it is a religion....I think atheism is actually a cult.:stirthepot::p:D

If anything, I was trying to stir you up. It wasn't really that fun though since you finally called me your dear brother.:) Go ahead and bring your cold drink and have a seat anyway.:D

I believe in theories that can be proven. ;)

Like math or science that can be shown to me. Or common knowledge things like wedding cake killing a woman's sex drive. :D

Woah! I forgot about this thread.....
Do you believe in the process of Evolution and the Big Bang? Both are theories and have not been proven. There are many things in life that can't be proven by science.

People who believe in God are content knowing there are questions we'll never have answered in this life time. As a result, it's impossible to find human reason to answers that cannot be answered, however, there are enough reasons and proof to believe in God.

I wont get into it now, but there are facts to answers that are biblical and match up with archaeological facts and science.

Do you mean to ask if I believe that creatures can change over time to adapt to their environment, survive predators better, and adapt to climate changes? If so then yes. I find that a LOT more plausible than the idea an invisible man in the sky snapped his fingers and made each existing creature the way it is today with no previous version of it.

While neither of those theories can be proven solid, there's a lot more evidence to back them up than in religion. Fossil records, residue appendages, genetic similarities vs what? A book? Faith? Hell even the books say he created the earth in 7 days, but not HOW he did it. Where did he get the materials? A lump of playdough, a pinch of salt, and viola! Planet earth!

Do you mean you don't believe in fossils? Of reconstructed skeletons in all the museums? Or anything on Animal Planet, Discovery Channel, etc where they film exactly what happens? I can't remember the last time I saw a documentary hosted by Jesus where he turns water in to wine, or anything else claimed by the bible....

Everything evolves. People are getting taller and living longer. Animals have evolved to survive in unique environments throughout the world (just watch the discovery channel sometime and see all the strange things nature does to survive). If god made all of those with no "beta" version, why is the rest of world so fucked up now? He made us and abandoned us? He's on vacation? Just watching us fuck everything up? Either way, doesn't seem very powerful to me or worth praying to. Or even really thinking about honestly.

    None yet.
Keep in mind that nothing can be proven by science. It can only be demonstrated to be supported by the available evidence. Contrast this with the fact that _nothing_ can be even tested when it comes to faith. A scientific theory must be testable and falsifiable to meet the _basic_ definition of being scientific. It is completely possible (and normal) for a scientist to 'believe' in something that may be completely shattered at any moment. A religious person by contrast will not let any evidence interfere with his 'faith'.

I fully endorse all of Slodgetto's response and sure appreciate seeing his post before I began a similar reply. He probably organized the data better than I could.

Silas-I'm impressed that you are a man of only 20 years. You obviously have studied and researched your Bible, Creation, Evolution, and everything in between. Stay the course.

So does this mean that when a new star is discovered, or say a new planet is found, that God decided that we needed another one and "poof" there it is? Or would your argument be that space has, and will remain, eternally stagnant; thus, the planet that we just discovered (figurative) was always there?

I don't want to get in an argument about space exploration or anything, I'm just trying to understand your viewpoint on how planets (i.e. Earth) are formed.

I will say, that you have some of the more convincing arguments that I have heard for the opposing view. Props to you for that.

I'm hoping this thread can stay civil, as it is becoming a very good debate that we can all learn something from.
