Rust on suspension: New Truck 2011

Is this normal. Thought it odd for a new truck

Some rusting spots on bolt heads, rear suspension parts, etc

 

Sucks , but normal for these trucks

I'm going in for a 30 day free checkup.
I'm going to instruct them to fix the existing spots

 

You probably drove it in the rain.

If you do tell them to fix the rust, what do you really think they are going to do? Replace, sand and paint, undercoat...If they replace it will rust again, if they sand and paint it will rust again, if they undercoat it will continue to rust.

Some battles are not worth the effort.

At what point should I become concerned?

Rustoleum and rustoleum undercoat, both rattle can, both readily available. That's what I did.

 

Don't become concerned. The frames as well as several other components on these Tacomas have made it a disposable truck. In 5 years trade and start again. The only thing on your side is high resale.

 

Painting or undercoating rust will not stop it. Even sanding and painting will not. Unless you are ridiculously fast and in a vacuum, iron exposed to oxygen will begin to form rust immediately. Undercoating is probably the worst thing you can do if there is already rust.

Waxoyl, boiled lintseed, or used motor oil are your friends East Coaster. Crawl under there once a year and give it a good spray then forget about it.

 

Surface rust will always form on exposed metal parts (suspension,exaust, etc.) It's completly normal. Even vehicals that sit on the lot will get it just from moister in the air.

 

It is normal. you could always use "gemplers rust converter" They use it up north in the dump bed salt trucks. If you do, never plan on take any bolts without a cutting torch.

 

Mine had a lot of surface rust on the tow hitch and rear axle back when it was brand new sitting on the dealer's lot...or maybe even earlier. Just never noticed it until a week after I bought it. I've come to accept that our Tacoma's rust easily and 1 year later after I got the truck I touched up the rust spots with POR-15. Heard great things about the stuff and I plan to do yearly touch-ups under there. Just wouldn't be able to stand there and watch my baby rust away and do nothing about it.

 

All cars and products are shit. Nothing is made with the same quality as 20 years ago. Not sure if it's cutting corners or metals that have been recycled 10 times before it became your truck. My buddy was at a jeep dealer and brand new jeeps were rusted pretty good and they had zero miles on them.

 

There's businesses out of Canada, called Krown, that will rust-proof vehicles. Their product is apparently strong enough that the E.P.A. doesn't want them in the U.S. at the moment. They guarantee your vehicle not to rust, so long as you use them annually. And they're not expensive. No Zie-Bart cheapness is good enough for my Taco. I live in Michigan and will be taking advantage of this.

I been getting my truck Krowned for the last few years and I'm still getting a lot of rust. I'd hate to see if I never had this treatment done.

 

I just got my 2006 taco, there wasn't any major rust, but I'm bringing it to VT and getting the everything cleaned and undercoated, its only like 60-80 bucks depending on how much there is to do, not a bad deal

 

Since it is a new truck, if you ask them to paint it I am sure they will. But, like mentioned its a on going battle. For me, I hate the site of rust so I just get under there form time to time and do a touch up. Just about any truck will have these issues, you see many new ford trucks on the lot with the diff covers completely covered with rust, or other heavy metal parts like axles, springs, etc. showing rust. I am garaged kept and still have issues. If your truck is stored outside, you will have to keep up on it more.
