I was woundering is the new 6 speed as big of a POS as what I've been reading? I really wanted to buy a 6 speed TRD 4x4 OFF ROAD but with all the TO bearing and imput shaft probs. I really don't think this would be a wise choice for me. Your thoughts please...

Keep in mind that people tend to come here to discuss problems they're having and to seek help.

Nobody makes a thread saying, "I drove my 6 speed to work again today and nothing went wrong".

    Know what I mean?

    ^ This.

100,000 miles on my 06, 6-speed. No problems aside from the rubber isolator in the original shifter getting worn and getting sloppy on really hot days.

I'ts not perfect but a helluva lot more fun than auto. Besides the squeaky clutch that I'll get fixed for free I've experienced no problems. Except for the short gearing what's the big complaint? And please, don't give me "trucks don't need a manual gearbox."

I am on my second 2nd gen Taco 6spd. No issues with either of them and this second one is boosted & driven/wheeled like its stolen. I love the 6spd (with exception of 6th gear, a true overdrive gear would have been appreciated).

Go and drive both, take peoples opinions here with some skeptacism. Most people come here to complain about stuff so you usually only get part of the story. Sure there are 100 people here that complain about their 6spd, but thats 100 out of how many actual 6 speeds??? They both have thier issues, just drive them and see which one you like the most.

No comparison. The T56 is used in Camaros, Mustangs, Vipers, Vettes. Closer gear spacing and is pretty much bullet proof. APR (Allan Phillips Racing) makes the conversion kit.

    Here are a few pics.

It's an 89 Toyota Pickup. I got some stuff done to it.. FJ axles going under it soon.
The 6 speed is an ok transmission unless you tend to "use" your truck harder then normal..especially if it's s/c or you like to roll gears harder then normal.

My father has had no problems with his 6 speed, but my neighbor down the street has had problems with his..but he is a little harder on his truck.

    Understand?

Does the 6-speed give people problems with a S/C?

I am supercharged and beat the snot out of mine and it has not given me a single problem. I take care of my trucks though, good fluids and checking regulalrly. I tow boats and trailers, I do heavy offroading, I have ran it at the drag strip, and generally run it like a rented mule and have not seen a single problem.

I would not go by the advice of a handfull of people on a chat board, your going to get alot of the "My cousins, nephews, neighbors, uncles, former roomate had a 6 speed and it gave him herpes as well as turned his truck into a 1983 ford ranger."

And as for changing the tranny out... Remember, coupe is an x-runner so he is looking for differant things than those of us that are lifted/4x4/pre-running/offroading so depending on what you want it for. My only complaint is that 6th gear sucks for an overdrive gear. It would have been better if they had made 6th gear a bit lower to drop the RPMS below 2000 rpms at 70mph.

    +1

I had 2nd Gen 2.7L with the 5speed. Didnt like the gear ratios at all! Especially when going around the corner at 15mph. 15mph is too fast of a speed to shift into 1st, transmission won't allow it and too low of a speed to get going in 2nd. I always had to feather the clutch when coming out of the corner...

I LOVE the 5 speed auto in my 05 Taco... Shifts are smooth and the transmission responds well to manual shifting.
