Why doesn't Toyota put a manual 4x4 lever in the Tacoma?

Fawk! I did not know this. Man, I don't think I like that at all. Did they seriously run out of space to put stuff on the dash? And x2 on the wires, no fun!

UHH. Your wrong there my friend. True, the button did actuate a motor that engaged the 4wd portion of that t case but the lever WAS and IS a direct connection to the hi/lo portion of the case.

Shift lever from a 2002 tacoma with the push button 2wd t case and a TRUE lever actuated hi/lo shifter.

Notice the recieving hole in the hi/lo shift rail for the shift handle.

It was a real shifter. Toyota just hadn't figured out how to get the hi/lo to work correctly yet in this case until the 2nd gen Tacoma's came out.

I would too if it were possible...

Couldn't care less about the push button radio since if it craps I wouldn't replace it anyway.

When it all comes right down to it, I want a model T. They were reliable and what did break was easy to field repair with pliers and bailing wire.

Also, I'll put a dual locked Tacoma, up against an A-Trac Tacoma all day long. In fact, I've already seen it. The A-Trac Tacoma was a good performer, but when the going got tuff it could not go where the dual locked Tacoma did. And the A-Trac Tacoma had bigger tires than the dual locked Tacoma did. That is why they put a REAL locker into the FJ's after the first owners of them complained so much. A-Trac has it's place for sure, but to claim that it is better than a fully locked vehicle....NO WAY!

I got tired of cleaning my actuater on mine and then it finally failed at the Hammers so I said enough. I swapped in the FJ case and no more problems at all. Toyota can keep that electric case and I'll just keep swapping in the manual case's for those that want one.:p

........seems strange to me for someone driving a 2wd to start a thread complaining about the shift method of transfer case in a 4x4 ...idk

I've been looking at moving to a 4x4 for quite some time now and traded for a 2011 FJ Cruiser 4x4 yesterday....hence the thread. The FJ just seems setup and designed much better for offroad than the Tacoma does, and the 4x4 lever was one of the little things that made it seem much serious about it.

Just chiming in in case Toyota ever checks this forum. I really miss the lever that I had in 2 previous jeeps. I believe in electronics, but prefer the utilitarian of the transfer case lever. I just got a 2011 access cab and will be very unhappy if/when I need it to engage and the solenoid refuses to engage and its a long walk out.

I moded 1999 Taco so much it had turned to Land Cruiser
The only thing I can suggest is if you want 4wd to engage when you needed is to keep it lubricated. So turn it On and Off often.

You are supposed to do this at least like once a month right? Even with a manual transfer case I think you are supposed to go off pavement and put it in 4 HI and drive like 100 feet every month or so to make sure the system cycles lubricant throughout.

I would have had more interest in a 4x4 2nd gen if it had a manual T-case. I don't trust the electronic 4x4 that auto manufacturers are pushing these days.

They put it it in the FJ, T4R, lets keep hoping it makes it into the Taco.

This. Fine to have a manual transfer case, but the ADD up front is still electronically driven, regardless of T-case type.

I will say that a manual t-case just feels better...there's something that just feels good about slotting a shifter into place...feels right.
