Line X my sliders

The paint on my sliders is getting pretty raunchy, especially with all the salt on the road. So, where the paint has come off, there's some surface rust.

So, rather then just touch it up with rattle can paint, I've been thinking about line-x or herculiner instead.

But my question is how do I prep them for the new finish? Do I have to strip the primer/paint off the whole thing or can I just rough them up, re-prime, then line-x 'em?

 

just take some scotchbrite to them...........then some laquer thinner.....then line them!

 

I think herculiner has a recommended cleaner/prep fluid to use. It's been a while since I used it-but it worked great on a pre-painted surface with just that.
That shit is SUPER sticky and doesn't need much extra adhesion.
Sanding them to clean the rust off and then cleaning properly after that is probably enuf.

What types of bed liner material comes in a rattle can? And when you mention laquer thinner, do I have to take all the old finish off first or just make sure they're clean? And do I need to prime them again before the bed liner finish?

 

plastikote and duplicolor come in spray cans.....................and no real need to remove the old paint..............if you primered it good enough......the bedliner will stick to the original paint. no need to prime again.

 

For the roll on type herculiner- No primer needed. Just make sure all the rust is gone and then use the lacquer thinner to remove dust and any dirt or junk on the surface.

No idea about the rattle can stuff- I used about 6 gallons of Herculiner to coat metal floor plates in a workshop onboard my ship (like 500 sq ft). We chipped off loose parts, cleaned it all and went to town. Worked great.

Is the herculiner a smooth finish or rough? Line-X is rough, right?

yep.............herculiner is rough textured..................really grippy.

 

probably not the best for sliders because its soo chunky that when you scrape on rocks it will most likely chip itself off

 

line the top half with the herculiner................regular paint on the bottom half....since it'll need to be touched up anyway.

 

I had wondered about that, but I'd heard from a few people that the stuff is really tough. Plus, when it takes a beating in the bed.

However, I have no personal experience with any of it, so I'm relying on you guys...

 

my buddy's dakota has Line-x in the bed. It is def. really tough, don't know how much of the rock scraping it could take, but still tough. There is a spot on th edge of the tailgate where it rolls over that got chipped some how it it did kinda "Chunk" off and rip. But line-x is really good on their warranty and they fixed it for him at N.C.

 

Just make sure you don't herculine your hootus...

 

it could work, I have used it on a lot stuff, and not much chipping, But if I were doing my sliders I would go the Line-x route because it is more fine and seems like it would slide better. herculiner is really grippy and chunky.

I thought about doing this too for a while, but now I just carry around rust treatment and a can of spray on bedliner.

im ordering my sliders on monday.............when i get them......i'll herculine the top half of them, and just use black rustoleum on the bottom half.....since it'll need to be touched up every once ina while anyway.

 

Can you just buy line-x in a spray can at an autoparts store or do you have to have it done at a line-x dealer?

 

at a dealer................line-x doesnt come in a spray can that i have ever seen.
