My main duct runs from my HVAC unit under my house lenghtwise, and is about an 18"x12" square box basically. With all the 10" round flex running out of it to the actual vents in the baseboard.

My question is this. The insulation covering the main duct got wet and I had to cut it off. Is there any particular type of insualtion i need to be putting back on it? I know its supposed to be R6 i think, but there is the bubble wrap stuff now and the old foil type still. Just wondering what would be best.

This... the old foilback shit is still great to use & like mentioned get it tight to the duct, use foilback tape for all seams, etc; Hell, I'd run some light gauge wire to spiral around it too just in case some heavy condensation/moisture accumilates & loosens up the glue on the tape & use some regular (but good/rated , ie; polyken or simliar) duct tape where the round pipe hits the supply plenum (square box) or better still get some duct sealer that is paint brush appliable.;)

these guys are right!!! that is the stuff that we use. 1.5-2" thick. put baby powder on your arms and rub it in . it will HELP keep the insulation from staying on you.

    lol wtf ! :notsure:

Thanks Joey, no not union, myself & 4 other installers hung all this duct for an indoor training facility (multiple environment shooting range) for Blackwater in San Diego ,Navy seals also train here. somewhere in the neighborhood of
85000-87000 lbs of metal, believe it or not none of it is lined, this is all exhaust ducting evacuating gunsmoke from facility, it runs thru 7 walk-in hepafilters before being released outside air, triple stacked rec. duct with the square to rounds is 34" Spiral pipe in 50ft lengths & oh yeah the first 6 years I was in this trade it was existing residential (retro fits & as-builts) & some new resi. tract work

it woulda been fun to do the layout & brake all this duct in the shop but the job was so big & time short so we farmed it out to a bigger shop for metal fab.. I haven't done any bench work in years kinda miss it ;)

    Nice!

I work on mostly walk in coolers/freezers, but I do also the occasional ice machine, reach in, cryogenics freezer, etc.

And of course occasional chiller and boiler here and there..but nothing too big..only 25 tons at the most.

Foilback insul is a pain in the ass ?? C'mon now !! You just need to learn how to cut it, diamond shaped strips for elbows, wyes are easy too, anything but that bullshit yellow wrap. I need to get you rooks out in the field for 6 months under my supervision make real installers out of you. Sounds like you 2 are gearing up for service techs which is great. Alot of guys think a pair of snips & a roll of duct tape makes an installer, not in my world, if I send a guy out to a job whether it be res. or commercial he better have a detailed take off sheet with material needed & detailed cut sheets with any fittings needed, offsets, transitions, plenums, etc when he gets back to the shop. I'm not a full fledged service guy but I do have 3 certs from Carrier corp. We have a great, well respected trade guys, do it once & do it right.....;):D

Duct board hold's up over here!

We have it had under our house for 4 years no problem
If in the right climate, it works just fine. Your right it's expensie but it's cool! :p

and reason why I hate foil wrap is because I repair shit, not install shit. ;) :p
Big difference, don't get me wrong I've installed stuff but mostly commercial systems that we just install, get up and running and another crew from my company does the ducting.

I'm working on my NATE certifications right now..going to take the Heat Pump test and Gas Heat one soon..
I wish I could be sent to school by Carrier or Trane,Hussman or something!

Don't hate, appreciate it. If it wasn't for me, your salad wouldn't be crisp at the store! ;)

P.S. that walk in hepafilter is badass, hepa's retain like what 98% of particles? i forgot that shit along time ago lol

Well then give me some fries with that BigMac sonny, 'cause after that remark I'm done with ya

Theres an old saying in the HVAC trade that goes as such: "You can make a service tech out of an installer, but you can't make an installer out of a service tech."

Truer words were never spoken .

Why would working at McDonalds be better than being a full fledged installer ?? You just insulted me & my aquired skills of many years, deserves some clarification I think...

Because I grew up around a bunch of commercial and residential hvac people..and none of them were sheetmetal workers.
They all worked residential service or commercial service.

It's just something we all got going between us..back and forth.
But you guys do keep our trade Pittsburged together...haha get it..Pittsburged. I'm funny

I've heard that saying, but what I'm saying is I don't do that and unless my supervisor instructs me to do that, or they move me to that crew...I don't ever plan on doing that.

I love what I do, I prefer what I do, and I'll keep doing it till I can't.

and I said I'd rather work at McDonalds then do sheetmetal, not full fledge installer. Big difference.

I do understand there are 3 parts to installation. System, duct, and start up.
But like I said I just do the system, and start up..I don't do any duct work stuff.
Closest I do to air distribution is changing filter walls, installing humidifiers, or something like an economizer.
