Yes a lot of the smaller cameras are great but what you guys have to understand is that yes you may have a small hand held 8-10mp camera but the sensor on that camera is the size of a pencil eraser...

Where the sensor size on a DSLR is the size of small post it note :D So they will capture a lot more detail and will be way more sensitive to light.

Nikon vs Canon doesn't matter because it all comes down to the quality of the lens you use. average DSLR with a awesome lens takes better pics than a great DSLR with a crap lens.

Canon dominates Nikon!! Plus when you purchase a canon camera it comes with very nice software, free!! Nikon doesnt.

I think it comes down to the person standing behind the camera. I'm sure that I shoot like an imbecile half the time with my Canon XSi and L-series lens.

I've seen a lady make an amazing photo book, all using disposable cameras.

I have the Nikon D80, it does come with a low level software package which has some editing tools but not much, I rarely use it. I rely on Elements for MAC to do any editing.
I like my D80 when I have time to use the manual settings, the glass and large CCD make a big impact on overall picture quality, used with a nice flash and tripod I have been able to get some nice shots. For ease of use and portability I would use the smaller point and click digitals, also for diving the case for my D80 will run me about $2k, I use small 8mp Oly instead.
Costco had a great package deal on the D80 with two lenses case and all for about $1100. In retrospect I should have gone with the D40 as the D80 is too much camera for me IMO.

Nikon D40. Best bang for your buck. I use photoshop so the 'free' software from canon is like microsoft paint in comparison.

I don't think anyone is talking about the Canon software for editing. However, the Canon software that you can use to control the camera is excellent. Everything you can do on the camera body you can do through the software. Very nice for macro photography or stills.

Figure this would be a good first post since I don't have a Taco haha...Not yet at least! I shoot with a Nikon D70, while my roommate shoots with a Rebel XTI...Really, I think it's all just about personal preference. How does the camera feel in your hands, button layout, etc?

    Go Nikon!

My vote goes to canon... I stated shooting photography with a 35mm nikon N70 because I didnt like the rebel I had learned with but when I made the switch to digital I fell in love with canon cause it seemed more comfortable to me and it had seamed easiet to navigate the menues and it had more options at the time so now im shooting the 20D but looking to possibly upgrade soon.

I bought a Nikon D300 and love it. I still don't know all the features it has but all the pictures turn out nice and I like the fast frames/sec rate. Most of my pictures are motorcycle races or dog Schutzhund trials.
