Some unbelievable quotes from the Council Members and a Resident:

Councilman George Brown voted against the compromise, saying the Pledge of Allegiance had no place at City Hall. “People can say it in their front yard or backyard,” Brown says. “It really doesn’t help move the city business forward. It does not unite us.”

Another pledge opponent, Councilwoman Betty Taylor compared saying the Pledge of Allegiance to reading from "The Communist Manifesto."

Resident Anita Sullivan summed up a common viewpoint: “So you say I pledge allegiance and right there I don’t care for that language,” Sullivan says. “It sort of means loyalty to your country; well, I feel loyalty to the entire world.”

The sad thing is there are plenty of people out there who see no problem with any of these statements.

It's funny how many Americans want all these rights but half the time will violate someone else's because its "their" right to do so. The other half of the time they want their simple freedoms, provided by America's patriots, but disagree with the belief of patriotism for some reason.

Last I heard you have to fill out paperwork to live here but not to LEAVE. Somehow I think they would have a hell of a lot more to bitch about living in the Middle East.

    Makes me sad...

Do they at least still say the Pledge of Allegiance in school? We used to do that in homeroom every day.

Pugga, unfortunately that seems to be a bye-gone era. We said the Pledge also.
Unless we get a President and Congress that have a set of balls to stand up against the left wing, I see no escape from the mindless buffoons. Too bad Ted Nugent will not run....although he would be labeled extremist by the left.

Nope- I am pretty sure it is gone from all schools now (we did it too). It's no wonder you can see people in the crowd f'ing off during the "Star-Spangled Banner" at any professional game. It's one of many things that's "desensitizing" young America to patriotism.

    I got your back!

I remember everyone saying the pledge in school and I remember standing there not saying anything because my dad (USAF Vet.) told me that since this is America I had the right not to if I didn't feel like it. If kids want to say the pledge then they should be able to, if not thats their choice. I'm from Oregon, I'm (primarily) liberal, I'm agnostic, and I'm proud to be in a branch of the military that allows me to save the lives of American citizens (Candadians too-they're right next door).
Eugene is very different from the vast majority of Oregon cities as well. And I hate not being able to pump my own gas when I go home to visit....

And people who don't stand/remove their hats during the national anthem should be slapped and escorted out of the stadium!

No troll intended, They just pick up on these stories to incite anger. I am a leader with the BSA and we say it before every meeting and I am glad to say it, and make sure the young boys understand its meaning. If this city council wants to avoid doing it that is up to them, I dont agree but it is not newsworthy.

You don't think it is newsworthy when an elected official compares the Pledge of Allegiance to the Communist Manifesto and another says that it is divisive?

It might not be in the part of the Country where you are but I assure you it is in most of the others.

To me, these contradict each other. You state that kids have the choice of stating the Pledge of Allegiance, but people (I'm guessing adults) who don't stand during the National Anthem should be escorted out of the stadium. Why do kids get a choice but adults don't? I feel that you stand up 100% or your points become invalid. But that's just me.
As a current vet (17 yrs so far), and from a family with a long line of military service, I think we need to have our kids standing, taking the time to recite the pledge. Doing so will instill a bit of respect for our flag/country and set them up for proper behavior later in life. It bugs the crap out of me when I see a senior citizen fighting to get out of his/her wheelchair to stand for the flag and some kid/young adult ignore/disrespect what he/we have fought for. Now reading about city council members making ignorant statements such has this make me wonder how they keep getting re-elected. “It sort of means loyalty to your country; well, I feel loyalty to the entire world.” You have loyalty to your country first. Service members understand this, patriots understand this, why can't lawmakers understand this? I hope folks take time to read up on people before they vote and talk to their friends about issues such as this.

Jim, I'll do better than that, I'll lock them all in a room and play a video of AMERICANS reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and singing the National Anthem over and over and only let them out when they are babbling idiots....OOPs they are already idiots just need them babbling!!!! This is a digrace and a slap in the face to all the Americans that fought for and are fighting for the freedoms we all have.

You have a very understanding dad. With me it wasn't and isn't an option. It might be America and it might be their right not to but as long as my kids, who are 23 and 21 now, are around me they will say it and they will stand at attention during the National Anthem. It is about respect and showing that respect to this great country of ours.
