I got a socal 4wd trail book off Amazon. I'm going to be hitting up most of the trails in the coming months and i'll be throwing out invites for whoever wants to come along. I'm 4x4 but I know quite a few of these can be done in 2wd. I'm just hoping to find out which ones so I don't say something is prerunnerable and end up wasting people's days when it isn't. It does list the trails by difficulty, and the description of a few says they are 2wdable, but I believe the author airs on the side of caution since we did the tds loop with a couple prerunners and it lists it high in the moderate list. Also the names might be different from what people know, as an example the tds loop is known as los pinos lookout, so if you need to identify a trail ask and i'll post a description. Since it is a book and copyrighted I won't post scans of the trails themselves. Hopefully the 2 pages below are alright since all they might do is make people more interested in the book. Anyways here are the trails.

For anyone interested in this book here is the link. http://www.amazon.com/Southern-Cali...7643/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1314962275&sr=8-1
It gives very good directions and good details. My only gripe is the binding was poor, after a couple pages fell out I took them all out and mounted them in a binder.

Whats up chris? Most of these trails we have all done once if not more than once! Any of the easy to Moderate trails are all doable in a 2WD. also some of the Difficult ones are also doable in a 2WD. Like under difficult they have The Mud Caves/Diablo drop off, many of us have done it in 2WD. The one that says Smugglers Cave/Elliott mine, been done by plenty of 2WD prerunners. If you are looking to hit up some of these trails let me know as i said before, we have been running most of the trails that are on there for the past 3 years now and know most of them very well! Kust tell me which one you want to hit and i will take you there! I will also tell you which ones are closed and which ones arent:D

Under the moderate trails listing, number 70, Last Chance Canyon. Absolutely DO NOT attempt this in a 2WD. Unless you think you can do this:

That place is freakin crazy hard. Why in the hell it was put in the Moderate section is beyond me! Yes he is right, dont even attempt to do this trail unless you are 4x4, locked(front and rear), and dont mind body damage, oh and heavily armoured!:D

Last chance canyon: difficulty: Moderate. The first part of this trip is the toughest. It winds through an eroded wash with moderate and difficult options. Heavy rains can move things around making conditions unpredictable. Pick your line carefully. The remainder of the trip is mostly easy except for one steep climb up a rocky hill. Poorly marked side roads make route-finding confusing. <<direct from the book

I'm guessing there is a bypass to this obstacle so he marked it as moderate? Either way that looks like fun, but I'm not armored yet so i'll skip it for now:D

One I have been curious about is the squeeze on pinyon mtn road. What are the chances of a second gen getting through this without destroying the side of your truck? I'll definitely be hitting you up when I wanna go matt. It'll be mostly weekends since that's when I'm off.

Yes, there is a bypass to that particular spot known as the V-Notch. But the bypass isn't exactly easy either. The first part is the hardest like he says, but it's about 1/2 mile worth of stuff just like that. Depending on the time of year, the dry wash sand gets incredibly deep. Even a locked PreRunner would have a hard time, especially since you can't keep your speed up because of the constant boulders.

If you're interested in checking out more of that area on a route that a PreRunner can do, check out my thread about Red Rock Canyon Trail Scouting.

Yeah that's what I was afraid of, and I'm betting the sliders with the kickout didn't help either. I'll add that to the list with the hammers. Something I'm sure I'll want to hit up, but probably won't be in my truck when I do.

That trail is not as hard as the picture suggests. You can do it in 2wd no problem. There is many bypasses around most of the obstacles. Here is a couple of pics from about 6 months ago when I ran it (Last chance Canyon)
