Flooded Engine, need help please!

    So, lets get it out of the way that I am an idiot apparently. I went through a moderately small water hole without taking into account the fact that the previous owner put in an K&N Performance STREET intake. The one that routes to the fender well and has no real protection.

    As you would imagine, I got a lot of water into the intake. The truck shut down the second I made it to the other side (maybe a 15 foot wide hole). I heard no loud noises or anything, it just shut off without much commotion. When I tried to start it (dumb, I know) I just heard a click, nothing too loud. After inspecting the situation, we realized what happened (water pouring out of the intake). We got towed off the trail about 100 yards to the road where we proceeded to do surgery.

    We removed the intake, manifold, plenum, coils, and plugs. After getting it all off, we took a turkey baster with some straws taped to them and sucked out about 10-15 oz. of water. I went to turn it over to get any other water out if possible but no go. The same thing of not starting. It would just click, like it wanted to turn over but couldn't. I tried to get a wrench on the engine to turn it over but could not get much leverage.

    Any ideas? I am thinking maybe the starter or solenoid? I guess I should say "I am HOPING maybe the starter or solenoid?" More and more I am getting the sinking feeling that it is a bent rod or something along those lines. Unfortunately, I had to get back to town for work (and for my friend's work) so the truck is now 320 miles away until the weekend. Frick...

    Starter is more than likely toast. I would bet the alternator is FUBAR also.

    You didn't re-install the plugs before trying to turn the engine over again, did you?

    How high were you revving when the engine stopped?

    Damn this is a bad story OP. I would start at the starter and its good then you have worse probs. Not sure but maybe they have some kind of shutoff in the ecu, maybe someone else might know. If so I would disconnect the battery and see what it does. I highly doubt you did internal damage to the engine though, not from some water in the cyclinders. Good luck.

    You sir have hydrolocked your motor. The "click" you are hearing is the starter trying to turn the motor over. However, it won't move because you either
    1) Bent a connecting rod or two (commonly referred to as "s-ing" the rods). Instead of the rods being strait, they are now in the shape of an S
    2) Broke a connecting rod or two (same as above, but with babies in the oil pan)

    Pull the spark plugs and drain the oil. If the oil comes out milkey, you're fucked. Then put a 19mm socket on the crank pulley and try to rotate it clockwise. If it doesn't rotate....you're again fucked.

    Thanks for the quick feedback all, y'all never cease to amaze me. It was a pretty horrible experience but I got to spend some more time in my old stomping grounds with some great friends...lifes little adventures eh?

    I would say that I was probably under 3K RPM when I went in, but I can't say for sure. I am sure I at least tried to punch it when I was in the water, whether or not it had started to die by then, who knows.

    The plugs were out when I tried to restart it the last two times (did it twice right outta the water before taking everything apart and getting the water out).

    I definitely hydrolocked the engine. I guess I did not know if it was always going to definitely end up being an issue of bent rods or if there was any hope.

    I have a mobile mechanic friend up there, so I will let him know what to look for when he gets a chance to check it out today or tomorrow.

    Anyone got a spare engine for sale??? :-/

    Give them the name of the road (even if its a nickname). My truck was hydrolocked on "Sand Highway" near Pier ave in Oceano, CA.

    I was honest and open about what happened and it was covered under comprehensive. $100 deductable.
