How big is the opening on the tailgate handle?

I'm looking at a couple camera options. One of them I like is a round 1 1/4" camera, but I'm not sure if it will fit.

If that one won't work, many of these look like they may be able to fit almost perfectly.

Well I went ahead and bought one, measurements are 1.00 x 1.20 x 1.00" for the opening, and it points almost straight down. Maybe a 2-4 deg angle.

 

After a little modification to the opening I installed a IR camera from Amazon and a JVC Nav system. Pictures to follow.

Tips...

Buy TWO screws when buying the tailgate handle. Part number is only for 1. These screws are used in the camera mounting holes.

2. Drill into the tailgate with a regular twist drill bit, at a slow and steady rate. I ran out to Wal-Mart at 2:00 AM to find a 5/8's bit and ended up with a bullet bit. Then about 10 minutes later ended back at wal-mart for a small round file to clean up the mess of a hole that resulted in.

3. When installing Double DIN in with the Scosche kit, you don't need the metal cage or factory bezel. Snap the side pieces onto the kit, install the Scosche bezel, and then slide in the radio only and install screws. Check alignment and tighten. Lets just say my bargain Scosche dash kit cost me double what it should have.

4. Power the camera from the Red/White wire under the bed that goes to the taillight, and the reverse wire on the radio from the red/white wire behind the driver kicker panel. This will save wear on your camera and insure it cycles on and off properly. If you have some need to turn on the backup camera when not in reverse though, this won't work for you.

 

Has anyone tried to pick up a 2009 handle from a salvage yard? Price?

I'm interested in adding this to my 2006 DC.

I will most likely use the Pioneer ND-BC4 that others have used.

Seems to me that if you don't use a 2009+ Toyota handle that using the Pop and Lock PL 5300 handle will have a spot for the camera and you also get the locking ability also. Correct?

Again, is it possibe to retrofit the Pioneer camera into EITHER the 2009+ handle or the PL5300?

Ordered the PL 5300 and will see about mounting that in my 2006. I'll report back. Plan on then having them mount the PIoneer ND-BC4 camera into the camera spot on the handle.

 

Received the PL 5300 tonight from Amazon and sure enough it has a spot for the factory camera. Whipped off the tailgate cover and 5 mins later, handle is installed on my 2006 DC and now it is ready to install a camera in. This will be much better than putting it down by the license plate somewhere. It will be out of the moisture, snow, rain, mud, etc, etc!!!!

The handle was a direct bolt on, fits perfect, even though Pop and Lock says it is for 2009 and UP.

 

Probably a stupid question, But would it be easier to find a 2009+ full tailgate and just do a swap?

 

not a stupid question, I think it would be easier too, but it looks like tailgates with cameras can be much more expensive

 

I did call a couple of salvage yards in the SLC area looking for a handle and did not find any.

 

you should try car-part.com, sometimes you can find good parts for decent prices

 

Thinking I may want to retro a back-up cam on my '06. What kind of cost am I looking at to do something like this. Would love to find a junked Taco with a stock cam and mirror and keep it stock per-say, unless of course there is a better way to go at it. Thanks in advance for any and all help.

It's the Scosche kit - got it on eBay in May of 2008.

 

Anyone had any trouble with that kit banging in the dash when you're on rough roads?

The OEM brackets are metal. It seems these being plastic is letting it flex and bag my DDIN unit around a bit. I don't like the sound of it either.

 

Has anybody tried putting the rear view mirror with the screen on the actual mirror part( i have seen it on the 2011+ 4Runners) into a tacoma??

I did mine for about $60-80 because I found the parts in a salvage yard and used some 4 or 5-wire water-proof cable from Home Depot (I think for sprinkler systems). It's just a matter of splicing it into the existing wiring harness and running it with the stock wiring through a hole under the seat and then a long the frame to the tailgate. As long as you do the work yourself and you get lucky finding the parts at a salvage yard, the cost is really reasonable.
