i never drove a pick up in the winter time, and i like to drive RWD as long as i can as to not burn through a tank of gas, so as a precaution i got some weight for the rear.

i centered 2 tough boxes up against the tailgate with 3 bags of 60 pound tube sand in each, strapped down. 360 lbs total. worked pretty damn well and barely moved.

I don't know if 360 lb of dead weight will consume less gas than 4WD. The only thing not spinning in RWD is the front drive shaft. The front diff and CVs still turn. Friction losses in RWD can't be that different. I think the only reason the truck is selectable between RWD and 4WD is because Toyota is too cheap to put a center diff in the Taco. (You know, like the one in the 4Runner Limited and GX460.)

    I agree

I pop it into 4WD when I need it , I have a Leer cap on for this winter , so that 200lbs and 4WD should get me through :)

Seems to help having the extra weight driving on the snow covered mountian roads of VT/NH. Usually driveways at the winter houses have a steep pitch and are snow/ice covered.

Oh, I wasn't trying to argue. More of a further explanation of why i drop the weight rather than drive w/o the weight.

I drive a 2wheel drive xrunner...... all I did was winter tires and a Shurtrax...best money ever spent

I had no problems through our winter in Ontario....... and I drove it in some deep snow

And its strapped down so there is no worry of flying objects in case of accident

Sometimes here is SC we get iced over roads and I'll usually put bags of sand back there to weigh it down. Last year when we had the big snow storm, ~6 inches!!!!, the local Walmart, feed and seed, lawn and garden, etc stores ran out of bagged sand. My Dad and I loaded up the riding lawn mower with the bagger attachment on and put old grass from a pile in my back yard in it and grass/dirt around the back of the truck over the wheels and covered it and drove like that for extra weight.

I have a cover for my bed. I buy 6 bags of salt for my water softener and keep it in the bed for the winter. It helps with traction and I use them on my softener during Spring and Summer. I initially thought of sand bags but a friend suggested the salt bags. Works great for me!

i dont usually put anything extra for the winter, i drive a little more carefully during bad weather, and if the snow is deep, i put it in 4x4 and all is good. So far so good...

No it's like little pieces of frozen water and can get slippery.

I used to carry extra weight in my 2wd PreTaco, now with a 4x4 Taco no problems.

That's an awesome product, but for that price?
IMHO, I'd rather get some sand bag tubes for a cheaper price and takes up less space. :)

2x 50lb bags of salt over each axle. I'll use them on the driveway or under any snow I might get stuck in. Works great.
