Thats what I thought. Those of you who know how big San Diego is realize this as well.

 

Hardibacker or cement board does not uncouple the tile from the substrate , it only strengthens the floor and provides a water resistant surface , because the hardibacker is mechanically fastened to the subfloor , and the tile fastened to the hardibacker , any movement or settling in the floor system is transferred to the tile and can result in cracked tile and grout .

The Ditra product uncouples the tile from the substrate , essentially creating a floating floor of tile over the substrate below . Any settling or movement is therefore not transferred directly to the tile and this greatly reduces the chances of cracked tile and grout .

On this particular job , we are going over hydronically heated concrete floors , how would you suggest we would even attach hardibacker ?

Screw though the concrete and hope we miss the heating pipes ?

Ya word we use the same type system but we don't have ballers that have the money to install it in the concrete

Concrete works best because it creates a thremal mass that stores the heat created by the tubing , this is the most efficient way to do it .
