It's a plant that has grown on earth for 1000's of years. Who is the government to say I/we can't grow, smoke, chew whatever you want to do with it? What's next vegetables, fruit how about tobacco something that science has proved will kill you! I do agree that he shouldn't be seen in public though, you never know who has a camera and will post your pic on facebook or Youtube.

that may be all well and good...and possibly right...

BUT...as of right now...in the state of SC...and most of the rest of the USA...with some exception in Cali (i think)...its illegal to grow, posess, sell, smoke or do anything else with Marijuana. Period

The guy...whether he wants to be or not...is a role model and he shouldnt have done this...

If he chooses to break the law and smoke...whatever...thats his decision...but im with Neon and think he shouldnt do it out in the public eye

As I previously stated, there were several reports about this (from reliable friends of mine) happening at several places downtown in Columbia...He also a complete egotistical asshole (which i cant blame him for because if i just dominated the entire world in something...i'd make all the ladies lay down for me too) but he needs to realize that people look at him and hold him to a higher...yet lower standard (if that makes sense) and he needs to think about his actions

Gotta agree with tigerfan00 and neon. This guy had everything going for him and now will probably lose a lot of his endorsements. What he does is his business, but I think he made a bad choice this time. Wonder which one of his "friends" ratted him out to the media?

"Is anyone actually shocked that he *gasp* smokes some pot? If there ever was visual PROOF positive that our culture's obsessive demonization of the drug is pure bullsh*t, it's the winningest Olympian in f'ing history taking a bong load while in his prime.

This should be the moment where everybody realizes we're being totally ridiculous about marijuana in this country."

being libertarian at heart i think we should be able to do whatever we want as long as we dont hurt others. hell, i dont care if you do heroin but as soon as you get behind the wheel and endanger others while high you need to get thrown in jail for a long long time. So i guess thats why i dont care that phelps smokes, its just no big deal to me

wow, some of you guys are blowing this way out of proportion. I myself think it's an en genius accident on his part. This will do the complete opposite of what you think. He'll actually get more endorsements and become even more profitable, that's just the way it works.

People are all the time coming out of the wood-work saying the same things about
Brittney (no need to explain), Jessica Simpson (chicken of the sea), Miley Cyrus (risky photo-shoot), Paris Hilton (sex tape) But what happened? The opposite.

tigerfan00 seriously man... what is it? Is it the fact that it's marijuana and you've been told all your life that it's bad. What if it was some substance that you use, like maybe cigarettes or chewing tobacco, maybe beer? Would you still point your finger and say no, no, no? Or maybe you're just the perfect roll model, a man with no defects; I highly doubt it though.

Speaking of roll model, who gives a da*n. If you or anyone else looks at what somebody is doing and says "wow that looks cool, I think I'll try it." That's your fault for being a dumb-ass not his, and you problaly deserve the consequences. That's how we learn things.

Watch out people! Teens are going to start smoking weed!!! lmao

The strongest will surivive, f**k the rest.

I'm not gonna get into the pot: good/bad debate.
Do I care that an olympic gold medalist hit a bong? NO.
Do I think maybe he should've used a little more discretion? YES.
