For those of you non-Navy types
A rating is a 2 or 3 letter code so that people can tell what kinda of Sailor you are.
FC = Fire Controlmen (weapon systems, various types, radars and such)
MM = Machinist Mate (works on AC units, and various large engines)

The number after the rating 3, 2, 1 stands for Class, unlike other branches that have Sgst and such. E4 and above are called some class of Petty Officer . E4 is 3rd Class PO, E5 is 2nd Class PO, and E6 is 1st Class PO .... so I am FC2 meaning Fire Controlmen 2nd Class PO.

(SW/SS/AW/etc) these are warfare qualifications SW is Surface Warfare, SS Submarine Service, AW is Air Warfare.

Also to the comment of "you work on helos why are you covered in jet fuel?" or something along those lines. Helos use Jet Fuel also, normally JP5 or JP8.

our aircraft along with just about every vehicle the army uses runs on JP-8. also, our gun and pylons and flight controls all use hydaulic power. we have 2 hyd systems on the apache and both are run at 3000 psi. getting covered in that shit is inevitable. helicopters tend to leak hyd fluid alot

 

army is sooo much easier.

for me im a SSG. my MOS is 15y38 Apache Armament/electrical/avionics system supervisor. which is easy to figure out. actually im an instructor/writer at the moment

the mos format

the first two numbers are for branch. in my case 15. which is aviation. all aviation MOS's have 15 in front. if u were infantry, it would be 11. artillery is 13, special forces is 18, signal is 25 and i think thats what slimwood is.

next we have the letter. that denotes specifically what your job is within that branch. for me Y which is apache armament/electrical/avionics repairer. if it was R i would be an apache crewchief. T is Blackhawk crewchief, U is chinook Crewchief, S is kiowa Crewchief, J is kiowa armament/electrical/avionics system repairer, F is acft electrician, N is avionics, and so on.

next we have the 30. this denotes what rank you are basically. e1-e4 will have 10, e5 will have 20, e6 will have 30, e7 will have 40. and the 8 in my 38 just means im a ssg/e6 instructor/writer. any ait instructor will have an 8 there no matter if they are aviation or not. the last digit can also be any other number or letter and it is to show if someone is say in an airborne slot or some other special spot.

one last thing, if u see any MOS with a letter Z after the first 2 digits, this person is either a master sgt/1st sgt or a sgt major/command sgt major.

but what is easy for us is that when u see someone on tv or a placard of their name its just SSG Mathis or SSG so and so or maj so and so. u see rank and name and know how to show the proper respect and courtesy to them. to me, that is hard with the navy cuz u just put random ass numbers out in front. if u were to just put PO2 2kool that would make since. or whatever. atleast your officers get it right

yeah cuz seeing someones rank (which is an acronym ) and their last name is hard to figure out who they are MOS doesnt come up unless u ask them
