    .

I have to agree with the "Mac Lovers" here ... once you go Mac ... you will never go back. You will have a little learning curve on your first Mac because things are so logical.

And I like the SAME company making the hardware & software too ... no more "it's the other company's issue".
When we had PCs ... it was always a battle between the PC maker and Microsoft on "problem issues".

And our Macs have NEVER been down a single day (knocking on wood) ... while our PC were down a lot more.

Just think of "Macs" as the "Tacomas" of computers ... :D

Desktops are an entirely different ballgame - those represent a very small portion of Apple's sales.

When it comes to laptops, Apple provides the best overall quality available on the market. Just picking them up and articulating the screen, using the Magic Touchpad, plugging in the power cord, etc will let you feel the difference.

MAC is running exact same hardware as PC, only overpriced.

Get a Lenovo Thinkpad with Windows 7, and save yourself a grand. As an IT tech, I've seen plenty of problems with Macs. For the percentage of the computer world that they are, they're no better or worse in terms of reliability IF you go with good PC hardware ... which is why I recommend Lenovo. I like the Lenovo T series (a bombproof standard) and also the Edge series (E420 or E520 but not the "s" slimlines). The fanboys rave about their Macs, and they are good systems. But by no means bulletproof ... just look, for example, at the big security hole discovered in OS X this week that's exposing Mac users to hacked / stolen digital certificates.

all the PC guys who have never used a mac always go back to the same argument about the price and they can get this much more in specs for half the price. what they all seem to have never know is that because the operating system is built for the specs not the other way around like in a pc, it run a lot faster and a lot smother and with less down time and headache and isn't constantly updating every third party program every day. mac specs should only be compared to OTHER MAC specs. its like taking a drag car and trying to dive laguna seca. there DESIGNED differently and should not be compared the same. (might not be the best example)

I have both. A mac book pro and an HP running windows 7. I have had this Mac about a year now, and it is faster than the PC. However I don't find it to be nearly as user friendly for most operations. The Mac interfaces better with other Apple devices. Let me tell you though, you have never seen windows 7 run until you have loaded it up on a Mac!!

Seriously though.... I am retired, I have time to goof around and figure out what I am doing. If I didn't, I would have stayed with my PC. Stick with what you know.

Also, most of the software I owned is made for a Mac. However I have to BUY a new copy if I want to use it. I have MS Office, but you have to buy a new one for the Mac. I have Photoshop, but I had to get the Mac version. It turned out to be a little more money than I had planned on.

That is true. Macs are more efficient in their use of hardware. But given the speed of today's hardware (which has far outpaced software) both are exceptionally fast. Again IF you buy good PC hardware. One other note .. especially if you are in college, I for one would rather carry around na $800 Dell Inspiron 14R or 15R than a $2000+ Macbook. Laptops get beat up (and stolen) at college.

You can get a well-equipped MacBook Pro for less than $2,000.

    .

Perhaps it is the Mac OS that is keeping us from crashing then.

I remember that we always had a hard time trying to keep PCs (based on Windows Vista OS) working.

Between PC and Mac with comparable stats, PC will always be cheaper and easier to repair.
If you're just writing papers, watching movies, surfing TW and nothing memory intensive spend a couple hundred and get a netbook (no cd/dvd drive) or a cheap laptop for college. Save the rest and spend it on your truck.
If you need the portability in college, like I did for AutoCAD, Photoshop and other programs while at school labs, then that's where you might consider one or the other. Look at the programs you will be using for your major and their compatibility on each OS. Like AutoCAD and REVIT just came out with Mac software versions but they are really buggy. Adobe Photoshop and its suite run better and are easier to use on Mac. I grew up on Mac since my dad worked as an engineer for Apple but had to change to PC for school.
Each OS has its pros and cons, choose based on your needs and realize you'll be going through this again in 2 years ;)

I work in IT. I work in a Windows world all day, and have a Mac at home. They are pricey, but you do more with less on Mac. As far as missing out on programs, most major software makers now create Mac versions. You can get MS Office for Mac. Like another poster said AutoCAD stuff, stay in the PC world. For school work you won't miss a thing. There is a leaning curve coming from a PC, so be ready. If you have a problem just Google it.

But if your short on $$$ go Windows. Always remember to check the Mac referbs on the Apple website. I know lots of people who bought off there with no issues. And student discounts.

not bullet proof, but there are 2 story balcony proof

i had a friend who pissed off his sister, she threw his pac book pro out a 2 story balcony, put a dent in the bottom the size uf a quarter, but like 2-3 times as deep as a quarter is thick (maybe more)

and he picked it up, and it booted right off the bat, nothing wrong

If you get a mac laptop, the Macbook pro is definately worth it because of the aluminum unibody, so much tougher than plastic

oh, by the way the macs can do just about anything except gaming, their digital imaging software (like photoshop and lightroom), while available for PC, is far superior to the pc versions. though i have been told that mac just came out with the AutoCad software, and it isnt as strong as on a PC

but reguardless, unless you are required to have a PC (like i am for school), go mac, you wont ever go back

(and when you do go back because you are required to for whatever reason, use Control for all the keyboard shortcuts, instead of the command shortcuts on the mac, or you will look stupid, trying to figure out what is going on)

I was a windows only person, but I bought a 13" aluminum macbook about 3 years ago and completely love it. I installed vista for school use, and honestly it ran better then on a windows based machine. I had a 15" hp laptop and got rid of it a year later for the macbook.

Laptop go for a mac. I've used the newer pc laptops with win 7 and don't like them one bit. I do like windows based desktops though.

The way I see it yea you pay more for a mac, but I bet the pc laptop will crap out in a few years and will have to replace it, but the mac will keep going problem free.

Macs are more expensive because they are better. There is more to a computer than simply "specs" and its called quality. I have had computers with lower specs which have out performed a cheap computer with good specs on paper. Windows/IBM/PC is getting old and dated. Apple is doing fanstastic things in leading the technology charge. There is a reason why they are one of the biggest technology companies.

    Facebook or Hi-5?
    VHS or blu-ray?
    Cassette or MP3?
    VHS or Blu-Ray
    Apple or PC?
