Bringing my truck to the dealer today for the 20,000 mile oil change. Last time I was there, they said my next visit would cost $270 (I don't remember what all they said they would do). They said I didn't have to get all of that but it helps with the warranty and life of the vehicle. Has anyone else gone ahead with this?

It is a load of crap, if you look in the manual, toyota recommends certain repairs at certain intervals, the dealer has their own recommendations (EFI, Induction, etc...) at certain intervals, these are never "required" by warranty at all. Actually unless it's part of some clause for extended warranty, u dont have to do any maintanence at the dealer as long as u can show proof of service via reciept elsewhere, in case anything did happen with the truck.

I see your truck is a 2011, shouldn't that all be covered under "Toyota Care"

It should def be covered under Toyota Care, I think what he is talking about is the extra recommended maint. by the dealer, which is never required

That should be an easy decision then, if it's not required by Toyota, then tell them no....All the extra stuff is just for the dealer to make money.

OP, tell them you only want what's covered under Toyota care.

i dont know if i would say all that, the extra stuff is just that, extra stuff. But all the extras i recommend, i would recommend to my own mother and i do them all to my taco and my wifes rav 4. they are extra, but they do help extend the life of the vehicle and add in fuel economy.

So what extras would you recommend? Or is it a case by case?

Do you work for a Toyota dealership? If so, then I would take your recomendation with a grain of salt. When the word "extra" used in conjunction with maintenance, thatreally means "unecessary" I don't think replacing the diff, or transmission fluids at 20K miles is going to extend the life of your truck, especially when Toyota has a 60K mile recomendation for diff fluids. As for filters, changing them when necessary is by far more improtant than mileage interval. The extras are nothing more than a money making shceme for dealers. Sorry if I am crapping on your profession, but I don't see the point of paying something that's not necessary; especially $200 worh of unecessary repairs. Most of the extra stuff can be easily done by the average DIY'er. 15 minutes max to swap out air and cabin filter.

It's all a case by case basis. Do you tow, do you off-road, do you live in the desert. The Toyota maintenance manual has suggestion or what extra intervals are needed based on your driving circumstances.

As i do agree that the filters are easy to replace, if you open your "warranty and maintenance guide" that all vehicles recieve with the owners manual, the rear diff fluid would be replaced @ 30k miles. I do agree that if your dealer is trying to sell you certain things it does pay to do your homework and see if its actually recommended or not. Fact of the matter is, not all dealers/techs are equal, i have seen plenty of dealers rip off cust, but i have always treated every customer as if they are my mother, if i wouldnt sell it to her, i wont sell it to you. And yes, i am a Master Tech at a large dealer in central florida.
