To each their own, and no athlete or celeb has ever influenced me to buy anything. Tiger Woods is a great golfer. I wouldn't buy a Buick. Most athletes and celebs make poor role models. I don't buy into any of that. I don't smoke pot. But I Love the way it smells.

I'm not free and clear from breaking the law...BUT...i chose to do it before I got put into any sort of role model status.

actually i spent the better part of my college career partaking in said substance...and then CHOSE to move on...i watched several of my friends completely flush chances to make something of themselves away and i decided I didnt want that anymore

if it were legal...then by all means i wouldnt care what the hell he does...he's a grown man and can make decisions for himself

What bothers me is that (regardless of anyones opinion) RIGHT NOW...smoking marijuana is illegal. period.

It should be treated as such.

Do i have my faults/addictions/etc...sure...i like beer and I like dip

But I understand my place in society and chose to think about that when i partake in said things

I dont go out to the local bars and get completely hammered and shout out everywhere that I'm a cop and then get in my truck and drive home. I have a couple beers wait a bit...and when I KNOW that im not intoxicated...i will drive home. If i feel that i could not safely drive home i find a ride.

Basically...the point is...that he got caught breaking the law and he's going to come out clean as a whistle because he's Michael Phelps.

I think the same of any of those other celebrities that get caught DUI or anything like that and then get off without any sort of punishment...

    thank you

Can you actually see marijuana in the bong? Where you there to know for sure that this photo wasn't taken in the privacy of someone's house? Looks to me like its in a house, a private residence, not a public place. As for being a good role model, does this make him a worse athlete? A bad man, whom you wouldn't want your kids to have anything to do with? Isn't it our responsibility as parents to teach our kids right from wrong? I wonder how many of those football players in the super bowl do drugs? And not just marijuana. Would it have been better if the picture had shown him slamming a bottle of whisky, or smoking a cigarette. That would make him a much better role model because those substances are legal. When was the last time you heard of a man beating his wife and kids while high on marijuana?

guys...we're obviously NOT going to agree on this

regardless of where the picture was taken or whos in it or whatever...it wasnt right and its illegal...period...i live my life on one side of the law...i chose that side and i do everything in my power to not cross that line...i realize that kids and such look up to me when they see me doing my job...and i dont feel ok going out and doing something that goes against everything ive sworn to deal with.

I believe that anyone in such a position...whether its because of sports...or career choice...or whatever...should think about their actions...

yeah, whats the difference health wise in taking a bong rip and smoking a pack of cigs or drinking a six pack. You wouldn't see anybody hounding him as much if it were cigarettes or beer... As far as a role model thing this is how I see it. A great swimmer, the best actually as it turns out. So a huge fan sees this and notices it as a fault. Now that this fan categorizes this incident as a fault he/she should try not to make the same mistake and therefore phelps is aiding the said fan. Just a thought

in concept...i agree with you here...HOWEVER...lets be honest...how many people will do that compared to how many may say "hey michael phelps does it so it must be cool"

as sad as it is...this society looks to each other for what is "cool" and this is of utmost importance to todays kids (and way too many adults)

you know what im mad about? i mean come on, 90% of these people giving him shit on the television have tried/smoked weed before, i dont care what he does on his own time as lon as its not helping him win gold medals and his integrity as a super athelete is crippled, this is NOTHING, why, WHY is this illegal when we have presidents and politicians confessing to trying it? it does not make sense to me that everyone thinks its ok and funny to just laugh at george bush and laugh at comedic spoofs like harold and kumar 2 where they smoke weed with him and we can tolerate movies (like harold and kumar) and tv shows (like that 70s show) where they smoke weed on a regular basis but then when someone actually does it they are shunned and looked down upon. But hey i guess thats america, hypocrisy at its finest

you're getting a little abrasive with one of our senior members. i see you only have 9 posts at the moment and while you dont have to have a high post count to have an opinion, you may want to lay off the more respected members until you establish a presence on the board. try to keep it friendly and welcome to TW

i have never been a smoker in the past (i may or may not have taken it up recently) but i have been an incredibly heavy drinker for the past 5 years and i can say for certain that booze is much worse for your body and your brain than weed. the only problem with weed is that it is currently illegal, and you get the munchies, which over time is bad for your body
