8 days after I get the truck from dealer, alternator goes......

After doing multiple tests on the car, my brother in law can't really say its the alternator, its holding the right amount of amps or volts when its on ( a perfect 14) but it drops down when the truck is shut off, so something is drawing power, but I can't figure out what it might be, all the lights are off, and the amps are still dropping by .01 every minute

 

bought mine from a dealer in western ma also, although it was new. haddad? or someone else

 

An alternator for your truck is over $300, Take it back.

 

Oh yeah I'm not just gonna forget about this, I was just wondering if they will only fix it if its at THEIR dealership or as long as its a legally run legit repair shop they have to pay for it

 

Have it towed the 2 hours there and put the bill on the dealer's desk.

 

call them. maybe they can do something for you over the phone before you go way back. maybe then know a repair shop closer to you. worth the call.

IMO this looks like its gonna be out of your wallet. If you just bought the tacoma 8 days ago, the sale is still as is, even from a toyota used certified dealer. Unless of course you bought a warranty.

If you had work done at the dealer like an oil change then the alternator went bad, I doubt your gonna convince toyota that they caused it to go bad.

With all the information given it sounds like a coincidence. I hope toyota will take care of you though.

 

Call and ask if they will pay someone in your town to fix it.
My guess is you'll have to take it to them to get it fixed.
Does the truck run if you jump start it?
If it does the alternator is working and it is probabbly a battery conection or a conection on the starter.
Was the battery light on on your dash telling you it wasn't charging?
If not have them fix that also.

 

Yeah I bought it from them, I know I have 60 days to get a full refund of any money I paid for the truck, but I love the truck, I just don't want to pay for a new alternator. I had my brother in law check it out, he owns a repair shop intown and he verifed that I was right and it is the alternator

 

Start ur truck n pull the positive terminal off ur battery if it continues to run ur alternator ain't shot if it dies then u can pretty much say its ur alternator.

 

Warning!​

Some people tell you that you can check your alternator by disconnecting it from the battery to see if the alternator can produce enough current to keep the engine running. BAD IDEA! Disconnecting the battery will subject the voltage regulator (and computer and audio equipment...) to significant voltage spikes which may cause an otherwise good alternator to fail. Even if there were no damaging spikes, this test would not indicate whether or not the alternator was good because the engine will easily run with a weak or failing alternator.
Simple Test:
If you want to see if your alternator is producing current, turn on your headlights when you're parked and the engine idling with the headlights shining on a wall (at night). Notice how bright they are. Then turn the engine off. The lights should get dimmer when you turn the engine off. If the lights get brighter when you kill the engine, the alternator was not charging sufficiently. When doing this test, the lights should be the only load (turn the stereo, a/c and other accessories off). With a heavy load, an otherwise good alternator may not be able to produce sufficient amounts of current at idle.

First you said full 60 day warranty. Than you said 60 days to get a full refund. Which is it? 60 day warranty means if something brakes or you find something wrong in 60 days they fix it. If money back then $110 and you or brother-in-law replace it.

Another option worth considering, how much is it for your brother to do the repair for you at his shop?

Maybe the dealer will send him an alternator at cost or possibly he deals with another local dealer.

The repair swap should be super easy, the part is where the money is.
