I like the loud engine - tells other drivers to move out of the way when I'm on the throttle. The engine just needs 0.6 more liters and two more cylinders. :)

My Taco is very loud... It probably wouldnt be as loud if I didnt love hearing the violent scream through my magnaflow exhaust of SUPERCHARGER being raped at the revlimiter... But thats just me, to each their own.

The ticking is typical since this engine has the direct acting mechanical buckets for cam and valves. I run amsoil asl 5w-30 it helped some, but did not totally get rid of the noise. Ask Toyota to make the dang engine with roller followers and hydraulic lash adjuster.

The ticking? That's normal. I've gotten used to it.

And it does sound like a diesel at times, figured it's the closest I'd ever get to a legal hilux

Hmmm this thread is making me consider a 4th gen 4runner with that smooth quiet V8 :D

But seriously, was the 3.4 in the 1st gen quieter?

Minus the ticking I think that the 4.0 is pretty quiet, quieter than the 3.4 in my 4Runner. But then again, this is coming from a guy who drives diesel farm tractors as a part time job

To be honest, if I can make mine last to 500k miles, I don't care how loud it is. If the "tick" is just a Toyota thing, I can live with it.

I called my buddy who has a 2004 V8 4runner and his sister has a V6 4Runner, they both said they have "ticky" motors.
