so i have searched and searched maybe im not usin the right words, but i got a 98 extracab sr5 5 lug with the 2rz and 5 speed. i do drive fast on the freeways and stuff and have been known to burn out here and there, but its also got 204k miles.. but about 10k ago i had no problems and recently second gear started to gring it has gotten worse to a point and then no longer gets worse.. if i shift at slowly or below 1900rpm its fine but the higher the revs the worse it grinds, but its not realy bad grinds just hard to get into gear kinda grinds.. when its cold it has no problems... ive changed the oil and put in royal purple synthetic with hopes but idnt hange much but maybe a little smotther operation all around.. any ideas??? is this normal?? is my trans gunna die? im ok with the grind if it will last otherwise... HELP!

I have a minor version of that problem when going into third (either up or down) as well. It came with the truck but its not getting any worse. I reckon it's the synchros or whatever. As long as it doesn't get worse and you don't mind it then you may as well let sleeping dogs lie.

the problem is inherent in all w59 transmissions. Nothing to be worried about, try to shift at 5k vs 5500, I noticed a reduction

    5K shifts
that seems a little high, I dont know what I shift at when accelerating onto the freeway, but i doubt its above 4k.

I also can feel it catch an edge when shifting into 2nd on my 2003, came with the truck, dont mind it too much.

You said it does not do it when cold. Oil is thicker when it's cold. Maybe try a heavier oil in the transmission? I would think synthetic would make it worse, less friction for the worn syncro to grab.

You shift at 5k!!!?!?! Holy shit you must really feel the engine when your foot touches the clutch! Geez, its not a Honda civic.

I always and will always shift at 3000 rpm, thats what every other Taco owner i know does.

I get 2nd gear grinding when the truck is cold. But its always fine after the temp goes up.

Here, lets actually read part of the OP statement:

Note higher revs? this does not mean 5k shifts, this means 5k revs vs 5.5k revs when you're going up high in revs.

Again, OP said he does burnouts and shit, every w59 grinds when shifting at high revs like he suggested.

normal driving 1500-2500 is where i shift. you and every other taco owner you know are shifting too high to get decent mpg.

Perhaps you could benefit from reading the OP statement as well.

so where do you shift at?? 1500-2500 sounds right to me. But you said you noticed a reduction at 5k-5500

I understand the revs, but thats pretty high still.

You're not getting it lol there is a reduction at 5k, vs shifting at redline. this would be for a launch situation, such as at a drag strip or a burnout like OP mentioned

yeah guess i dont understand. Different strokes for different folks. I personally wouldnt ever rev my truck to 5k to drop the clutch and show off a sick one wheel burnout with open diff.
    My apologies

haha ohh how some people dont know when to quit.
    +1 to rucas
dmonkey still needs to grow up

    To the OP:
it could be a number of things, maby just the number of miles on your trans, and how its been treated throughout its 13 years of life. Could be the synchros. Like others have said, if it gets worse i would take it in. (also if it gets worse after doing a burnout, you found your problem.)

It's an 89 Toyota Pickup. I got some stuff done to it.. FJ axles going under it soon.
It's your shift fork. It's getting ready to snap :D

    Point proven.

Every W59 grinds unless it was babied from the start of it's life and ran a GOOD gear oil.
Put Redline MT-90 in it..it'll smoothen the shifts. If you keep slamming gears, it'll break. A new transmission is like $200 though.

I got 68k miles out of slammin the hell out of that transmission, grinding 2nd, etc. All kinds of shit. I split the case and it looked brand new inside but the shift fork fell out right when I split it lol.

P.S. 7.5 Rear ends lock up alot
    Point proven again.

yeah so just to be clear when the trans is cold every gear is a little stiffer than when warm but no gear grinds not even 2nd.. But once the trans get a little warm 2nd will grind with any RPM's over about 1900-2000.. if i shift before that even quicker shifts i get no grinding.. BUT if i shift slow even say a 5k rpm shift while warm if i take my sweet time which makes it pointless to even shift that high, basically let the revs fall back to damn near idle it wont grind at all.. in my head it seems like syncros cuz of that but the hot and old difference throws me off. i bought the truck off a dead old man (his wife), its not abused and in good shape and well maintaned for the miles its got but the bed shows some use.. so i dont really know. i have only put about 20k on the truck and when i got it it didnt grind, but it was a little stiff. i dont care about the grinding but i wanna be able to trust the truck to drive it a distance.. maybe ill look or a used tranny.. hey Undefined, did you rebuild your tranny?? how bad was he job?
