I'm at Osan, but not for to much longer! I have enjoyed seeing some of Korea including the DMZ, and Seoul. I know it's a once in a lifetime experience but I can't wait to get back to the states to be with my kids. Oh, and of course I miss my TRUCK! I added a lift, some Nitto TG's, and a few other things to it while home on midtour, love working on it.

Been in the Army 9 years as a CH-47 Flight Engineer! 1800 flight hours later (950 of it under NVG's) I'm leaving it all in November. I'm sick of being deployed. To those thinking about it go Air Force, you'll get treated better.

    Just the basics
Not being sarcastic at all but what does a flight engineer do on a CH-47? Enlisted position I'm guessing. Are there newer models that do not require a 3 man crew? I know there are a few of the older C-130s out there that have 3 man cockpits with the nav position being filled with an enlisted vs an officer.

On a CH-47 we usually fly with 2 pilots (warrant officers or commissioned) that are primarily responsable for mission planning (flight routs, what are we carrying, time on target, coordination for air assalts ect. ect.) Then in the back, we fly with three enlisted, usually two crew chiefs and a flight engineer if it's in combat. If it's back home we fly with two, one crew chief and a flight engineer.

A flight engineer, I'd say, is more or less a traveling mechanic. It's our job to know how systems work (Air Frame, Hydraulics, Electrical, Power Plant, Rotors, Utility) limitations (how much we can carry, how fast we can go, limits on the systems mentioned above, and where stuff will be carried.

We do a lot of primary things when it comes to external loads (sling loads) such as inspection and acceptance of a load, Calling a pilot in and over the load into position for a hook up. We do a lot for "Brown Out" (read "scary as shit") landings because usually the guys in the back are the only ones that can see anyways. Air space surveillance and we Man the Guns in the back.

Were supposed to advise the pilots in mission technique, but they never seem to listen anyways. Oh! And if we happen to carry passengers, we have all the responsibilities as any flight attendant would. (stupid seat belt lecture included)

It's been a pretty cool job, but I'm kinda burnt and been wanting to do something else for a while. I've met a lot of really good guys that will be my friends for a very long time. But Hind Sight, kinda wish I had joined the Air Force (my dad was Air Force for 21 years, Ret. Capt.) Joined the Army kinda out'f spite. I think being a C-17 or C-130 crew Dog would have been crazy fun!!!
