So im going to look at this 4x4 today...

I have been wanting to trade up to a 4x4, but i dont want to buy one with over 110k on it. So i found this one, 85k, owner said original miles, on the other side he said he thinks it has had 5 owners. Where it said the body was in "rough" shape he told me it was because it just had some small dents(which i could care less about on a 4wd). He has had it for a year and is selling it to get something cheaper to pay off student loans and because he didn't use it much or wheel with it. He said a guy looked at it yesterday but said it ran rough, but im not sure what he specifically meant by that so ill have to see when i look at it.

What should i look for to make sure this thing is not going to break down or need $1000 worth of repairs in the next 2000 miles. Idaho doesn't use road salt so i doubt there will be rust but ill be sure to check it out.

The monkey wrench in this whole situation is that i would have to sell my current truck, my 2wd 99' with 36,000 original miles. So it will take a killing of a deal to make me part with my current taco

 

hmm.... he seems like a straight forward guy if hes telling you bad stuff that other people said... i would try for like $4500 though. doesnt seem like a bad truck though

So now im confused. I thought that 1st gen 4x4s with low miles were worth bookoo bucks, and you both are saying meh, go lower. I thought this was a steal!

oh and i saw that you sold it. Didnt you have some gold rims like a year ago? I thought it looked great with the gold. No more auto cross and driving it like its a sports car for you then.

Is it 3.4? Timing belt and h2o pump due at 90k miles. At least $500 if you have it done, lots of labor. Does he have any maint. records?

If it is running a little rough, could be as simple as plugs, dirty MAF sensor, or it needs a throttlebody cleaning, all simple.

Lift: What kind of lift? could be good or bad. Who put it on and when? Blocks/spacers? Or aftermarket coils/leafs? Shackles? What kind of shocks?

5 Speed? These clutches can last well over 200k miles depending on the driver, but with 5 owners and who knows what kind of wheeling, it could be badly worn. Do some hill starts to see if it slips.

Take pix of the tops of the coils and of the leaf springs lookging from the rear shackles forward. If the leaf tips are frowning below the axle, they are shot. Stock number of leafs shoufl be 3 on top, 1 overload.

Does not appear to be a TRD (diff locker, white gauges) or SR5 from the outside, but it has been debadged, so hard to tell without interior shots. AC? Cruise? Electric windows/mirrors? All these things would boost price, their absence lowers it.

 

Because you can get it cheaper! I bet you could get it for $4800.


I had some goldish orange wheels, sold those the other day for $150 with 2 damaged ones..one had a crack, other had a small nick.

ill be sure to take some pics, and see whats on the inside. Mainly right now i just want to know if there is anything to look at that would indicate if it is in good condition of if it was abused and is going to be a money pit.

4800 seems quite low. If i got it for 4800 does that mean it will be a POS?

also to keep in mind this is my DD. So I would like it to last to at least 150-160k without really breaking down (from normal use). I certainly wouldn't wheel it like some of you guys here do. It would do the occasional mellow trails but the main reason i want a 4x4 is because it will see a shit load of snow action in the winter when i go boarding and go up to the mountains.
