Advise on fixing gas tank is needed

I'm not sure at all what happened but when the truck was flexed on a poser rock my buddy noticed a chafed spot on the plastic gas tank. Looks like a rock or got jammed up between the tank, skid and the leaf spring. The skid is suppose to protect the tank and it seems it actually hurt it this time. Probably just a fluke but it happened. I'm thinking I could clean up the spot, get the filings removed and patch it up with some plastic epoxy. I've never used the stuff before and I'm not to sure how well it bonds or if I can use it to fill in the hole. Any one have any experience with using it? It's not leaking but it seems quite a bit of the plastic has chafed away and I'd rather be safe than sorry. Here are a couple pics to see what I'm talking about.

 

u must have been twisting that truck really hard.... first gens have this problem too, i had to bend my tank seam out of the way..... ur tank is plastic exterior, metal interior.... if its not leaking im sure your ok. Id seal up the metal tho. epoxy or even like tar sealant would work i bet

Good idea on the tar too. It's not down to the metal but it feels thin. I'd like to build it up some just for piece of mind. I still can't figure out how it happened. We didn't hear anything really out of the ordinary.

Some thermoplastics can be dissolved by gas, but as far as I know nearly all thermosets (ie: epoxy) won't be affected by gas.

There is an epoxy made specifically for patching gas tanks. We carried it when I worked at Kragen. My understanding is that gas eats almost anything.
