overriding video feed to rear view mirror screen

I have see the posts about overriding the rev line to the backup camera with a switch to have the ability to turn this screen on at any time.

has anyone taken this another step and intercepted the video feed? It is likely just an analog feed (probably rca). It would be great to put a video switch (maybe tied to a rotating, discrete position knob installed in a blank).

I would also install an aux RCA video input near the aux audio input. You could hook up a smartphone or ipod to this (navigation in stock mirror?).

other uses
- a small camera facing down on rear seats to watch your kids in rear facing seats
- forward facing camera under the rear bumper to get a ground view of the terrain and clearance
- cheaper handheld GPS unit with video out


I haven't even bought my taco yet (next week), but this is my style of project. Also, I heard that the resolution went up for the 2012 (I know the screen size went from 2.7" to 3.3", but wasn't sure about res numbers).

 

can you also mod that?

 

Hey OP, I found the connectors for the video camera right on the fuse block next to your knee in the cab. There is a junction point, which makes the mod very easy to do if you want to.

Probably more of a safety feature so you dont get distracted. the screen is less suseptible to burn in since it is an lcd. crts and plasmas are the screens to worry about.

 

i see the wiring harness... it doesnt seem like anyone has probed the actual video line--only the power line. ill have to give this a go it seems.

 

The video line is contained in connector IO1 which is just below connector IN1. FWIW, I have read reports of aftermarket devices using the video feed. If you search you may find a thread or two on the subject. Good luck with it.
