    Hi,
    I'm really not interested in keeping the shell all the time (My DC looks like an SUV in my opinion)
    So I want to install a hoist to lift up the shell and keep it out of the way.

    The question: Do you know if I can buy the plans to build one? (In ebay you can buy the "kit" for $128 but I think that's way too much for what you get)

    A friend and I designed & installed them for our shells years ago. (IIRC, component cost at the time was around $50.) I don't have any pics of mine, but he generated the attached slide show of his. Both setups remain in regular use and are still going strong. Effective, convenient, and cost effective.

    That slide show is awesome!! I'm in the process of doing the same as OP, I need a place to put my shell, but not a lot of options. This looks like it could be my solution! Except one thing, I'm a little confused about the J clamps and how they hold the shell in place... would you be able to upload some pics of the shell on the hoist? specifically how the shell is secured to the hoist... Thanks so much!! +1 for you for making this available to the me right when I need it most! :D

    macgyver built one and had pictures in a thread somewhere. Probably easiest to PM him for pics. It was basically just a couply heavy ratchet straps and eye bolts in the roof rafters to hold them up.

    Happy to have been of assistance. I probably should have clarified my that a bit. The J-clamps are only used to secure the shell to the truck. When it's on the hoist, you simply drop long (straight) bolts down through the front and rear J-clamp "sleeves" on the shell, into the "Holes" pictured on slide 4. They keep the shell from shifting forward or back while being lifted/lowered. Since it's not bouncing around like it does on the truck, it doesn't need to be bolted to the hoist. Make sense?

    My shell is currently on my truck, but I'll try to snap a few pics when I pull it off...

    5100's all around, 2.75 inch lift, polyurethane body mounts, gibson exhaust, variation of the deckplate mod, intake resonators removed 285-75-16 goodyear AT
    My shell is generally off in summer and back on in the winter, normally I just lift it off myself and get a friend or nieghbour to help put it back on. A hoist inside a garage that keeps it out of the way is a good idea if you have the room but a bit of overkill.
