This has been an ongoing dispute here of why they are bad with plenty of pics of what happens when things break due to "bottoming out". I have the Fat Bob's spacer lift. Well I took my 5 lug off road today where 2wd vehicles are not meant to go {really rocky, steep hills and desents, deep grooves in the ground from water runoff} and everything is fine. Things got really ruff quite a few times where I know I bottomed out often, went out to check if everything was ok and things were fine. First off I am stoked my truck did fine, never had a single problem. Second....I noticed every single pic of shock breakage is on the 4wd or prerunner running stock 5100s with this lift, not 1 single pic of the shocks on a 5 lug breaking. What's the deal here.

I would guess that few people run 5 luggers off road vs the 6 lug trucks.

And, 5100s are not stock. They are an aftermarket replacement.

It's funny that it's always the same 2 or 3 pics out of 1000s of people who run them.

Oh, I didn't know. Just seen every pic of them being broke was a 5100, thought they came stock. If your gonna get a lift kit and 5100's why not just get the right lift. Not so easy for us 5 luggers.

But on a serious note, I did run a procomp 3" spacer for about 1 1/2 years. It rode like a dump truck and would never recommend them to anyone, now saying that I never had a problem with them besides the ride and eventually they started to sag pretty bad. But as far as any thing breaking no I never had a problem and it was wheeled with the spacer.

only pics i've seen of broke shocks w/ spacers were stock yellow billies, not 5100s.

I stand corrected again, but still no 5 lug shock breakage. Should I cool it while off roading or are 5 lug shocks just set up better. Chime in folks.

Yeah I don't think I've seen 5 lug drivers get that much air. most of the guys braking there stock shocks are hucking there trucks or bombing down roads that bottom out the shocks.

Hmmmm, would I be the first? If it's not going to break than the need to upgrade down the road seems less and less important. Somebody please tell me if this system has ever broke, aside from the haters.

Definitely not trying to get air, mid travel suspension is in my sights though.

ive had fat bobs for well over 2 years, ive wheeled it pretty hard. Was holding my ground with some LT guys for a while. never had a single problem. the ride is a little rough but new shocks will fix it.

Never seen a 5-Lug personally with the Fat-Bobs lift on it but I'm assuming it's similar to every other spacer lift. The Problems can occur from bottoming out the suspension prior to hitting the bump-stops (as the spacer has pushed the suspension down so you "run out" of up-travel prior to hitting the bumps) or from over extending the joints since the lift pushes the shock downward allowing for more droop.

On Taco's from what I know there is extra room to accommodate for the extra down-travel, hence the market for Ext. Travel Coilovers (not sure if this applies to 5-Lugs though).

Since you don't have CV's to bind with travel, you shouldn't have too many problems. Check that when your suspension bottoms out that it is coming in contact with the bump-stop pad. If Yes, then you should be fine. If No, I'd look into extending your bumpstops.
