Well after looking for used Tacos for the last year and pretty much giving up on the idea of finding a nice, low mileage one I can afford, I've all of a sudden come in to a little money. I'm going to be able to buy a NEW Taco!

Before I take the plunge, I wanted to get some feedback.

I'm a 60 year old guy. Don't intend on going offroad. Pretty much going to use it for commuting to work and going to Home Depot. I do want 4WD for the occasional snow or dirt road, but it'll be a rare thing that I'll be offroad.

I need a double cab, probably a short bed. Want some luxury in it and a good ride, so not looking for sport suspension or off-road suspension.

Any tips on which options I need to make sure I get? Anything to avoid?

For a smooth ride and 4x4 the TRD off road will ride a little rougher due to the tires. Get the TRD sport or an SR5. A long bed should ride a little smoother too. Good luck!

    Congrats on the future purchase.

DC SR5 SB 4x4 V6 sounds like what you are looking for. The Off Road also has a Diff Locker that gives you more traction. But by the sound of it you really aren't gonna be doing much Off Roading so you'd be fine with the 4x4 with Open Diff.

Thanks guys. The long-bed is a good idea.

But what I'm really looking for is some advice on navigating that bewildering list of Toyota options. Seems like everything I want either comes with 10,000 things I don't or you can't get in combination with other things.

For example. Want Remote Keyless Entry and Cruise. Don't really care or need Sliding Rear Window or Steering Wheel Audio Controls (Double Cab Convenience Package)

I'd like the backup camera, but don't want the TRD Sport Suspension and I don't want to delete the passenger side fold flat feature. Want the 114V/400W Deck Powerpoint, but I sure don't want the TRD Off-Road suspension.

Seems like Toyota is making a real effort at keeping me from getting what I want.

The 09+ SR5s (non TRD) come with the rear Back up camera (I think)

Have you driven a TRD Sport? I don't know how the SR5 compares on ride but my Sport rides surprisingly smooth. As for the options, most manufacturers get you that way by "packaging" things together. The Sport comes with the power outlet and the back up camera, but no passenger fold flat though.

Mine did, at least. I have the "stage 2" pack - basically tow hitch, alt/tranny cooler and BU camera.

:pThere is 0.0% luxury in a Tacoma. It's all hard plastic and cloth and more plastic and maybe some pseudochrome. Not necessarily a bad thing, but something to know going in. It ticks and lets in a ton of road/wind noise on the highway. Drive an F-150 and then drive a Taco - it's like night and day. I still love mine though.

Just bought my 11 DCLB TRD Sport. i also drove a short bed off road package and it was way more bumpy and bouncy than my truck. Not sure how much of that was suspension or tires or wheelbase, but very happy i went with the sport package.

Bummer. Don't want a big truck. And it's a LITTLE money, not enough to buy a $40+K Ford.

    Nuts

I bought mine about a month ago and had the same thoughts in my head.... so I went with the sport, 4x4, long bed, tow package etc... for comfort and utility. Spent a little extra money on all the "package" but happy so far no regrets. Expect to have this truck a very long time.

Just get a Double Cab, 4x4 V6, Short/Long Bed your choice. No TRD Stuff if you never plan on heavy off-roading, TRD packages add quite a bit to the pricing, however if you can talk them down to a Non-TRD Priced truck then by all means go for a TRD package. Go for an SR5 too, you just get a few more features. One of which, like mentioned is the backup camera.

The "Star Safety" system (standard from 09+ I believe) includes a Auto Limited Slip Diff and Traction Control anyways, that should be more than enough if you don't plan to do heavy off roading.

SR5 DCSB is easier to park than LB and will have the options you need for a lower price tag. As mentioned, the Sport has a smooth quiet ride but has a tendency to go airborne on large bumps.

Are looking to buy a new 11 or 12?
There great deals right now on the last of the 11s. I just bought one two weeks ago. Didn't want/need 4WD and didn't want the non-functional hood scoop. The local dealer had about 20 to choose from and I got a SW DC SR5 PR.

Go for a Prerunner, SR5. Thats what I bought and I absolutely love it. Fancy, but not over the top. And the camera is AWESOME! 4x2, so its cheaper than the TRD 4x4. Good luck and Congrats!
