Different way to mount subs

So I want to do another upgrade to my system.

I want some deep bass and I'm looking to install two subs. I'm going with Rockford 12" Shallow subs which were recommended to me, probably.

My problem however, which might change the sub I go with, is that I cannot use the back part of my rear seats. I use my truck as a work truck and most of my electric tools are hidden behind the seats. This also lets my seats be used. I almost bought a box for that part, then I remembered this.

So I need someplace else to mount the subs and the amp. I've though about below the seats, and I would not really mind hacking away down there. My questions would be...

Would sound still be good if I mount them down there?

Would mounting the system down there be even possible space-wise?

Would the components like the amp get hotter down there or something?

Anyone with any input and even more with pics will be greatly appreciated. I really do not know much about sound systems, so treat me like a noob.

Also, i'm probably going to sound deaden the floor if I end up doing this.

Yes, it's possible....no, it's not easy. First you need to seal the area below there. My suggestion (and what I did) is fiberglass it. You wont be able to get it out, learn to accept this. Go into this project assuming that success is the only option. Make sure you glass in some wooden beams (I used 2x2's) that you can tap with a threaded insert to be used as attachment points toward the front.

All pictures are in order from initial conception to where it stands now. Currently I'm running the two sealed E3.8 subs from Elemental Designs. It's perfection.

You said you wouldn't mind hacking away down there so I'm offering this advice assuming you have somewhat decent fab skills.

Would 2 8s hit decently? I figure id use the middle for the amp, so 4 8s would not fit. There is also the option of trying to fuckfit 2 10s???

Well, sealing the area below seemed like it would be necessary anyway. That's fine. Fiber glassing, you mean the bottom no? if so, why would that be a problem? Is it just that I wont ever be able to put the storages back in? Because that is definitely not a problem. As far as fabrication skills. Ill do it carefully. I'm sure i'm up to it.

 

I'm not sure what "fuckfitting" is but I'd recommend using lots of lube.

10's will not fit because the flange is bigger than the baffle area is wide. You would have to perform a miracle to have them fit. Not saying it's impossible but I never figured out how.

You also need to cut the bin metal so it's all on one plane. What I mean by this is that in it's stock form it's mostly flat and then slopes off at another angle. You need it to ALL be a perfectly single plane at an angle so you can use one board. It's the key to getting this right and making sure you get a good seal.

Ok so as far as components, I think ill be ok. Cutting should not be a problem. I read what you did and while it has to be precise, it wasn't much what needed to be cut. Ill just measure a million times before cutting.

Now, I see what you meant by glassing the bottom. When I went and read, it was an issue of needing to seal it perfectly. Now that I understand that, I have no problem with doing so. Ill just glass the hell out of it. I don't plan on letting go of this truck anyhow.

Only problem im seeing so far, would be the board itself. While im sure I could make the board, it's probably not going to come out perfect, because honestly that is not my craft, so I don't have the required tools for that to come out perfect. Ill have to see what I can do about that. I have a friend who is an artisan and he does really good wood work. However it would be more about borrowing his tools...

Ill see what I can do when I go and measure everything out this weekend.

One remaining question though. Were you able to fold your seats flat with no problems?

I've stated before that I'd make the top baffle board section for anyone that wants them. But you'll have to do the fiberglass work on the bottom section yourself. When most people figure that out they usually quit considering it as an option.

2 8"s will give you really good bass, will they hit? It all depends on how big your wallet is and what will fit. I ran 2 8"s for a while and blew away people with how loud they were, it all goes into planning and picking the right speaker. 8" speakers can rock.

However, that Pioneer sub seems a bit weak? Then again, it would be perfect for matching with a JL 5 channel amp, like this one.

The way I see it. Since the subs are not as strong, I can power both subs with the single 300 channel and then dedicate the other 75 channels to front and rear speakers. Im I wrong here?

Ideally I think a sub like this would provide the "boom" im looking for. However, I need to check the space I have, because I fear it will be too big, depth-wise, for the area im working with. Another problem will be the amp, as Ill need more juice.

Question:

Should I just stop being a pussy and run 2 amps? 1 For the speakers and 1 for the subs? That way I can be happy and blow my speakers into oblivion, giving me the perfect excuse to upgrade to the Type R Alpines I wanted?

I also like this sub...

BTW. Checked and the fiberglass part will not be a problem. Also went and checked some wood, and to my surprise, my father has all the goddamn tools I need... so I think imma try and make the board myself and if not, dish out some $ to someone here who knows his shit...

I have 1 polk 8" behind my seat. It sounds better than the 2 kicker comp vr 10's I had previously. 8's are the only way to go. Plus they have a better range for different kinds of music. Trust me you will not be dissapointed. My custom ported box was built for 2 but I got it for free from my audio store...

 

He needs other options other than behind the seats.

 

Update:

I have started making the baffle based on the measurements I will have once it is all cut... I have all my supplies except the sound deadener because it has not arrived. It is on its way though.

I will most likely cut metal this week or in the weekend. I checked the fit for the two Type Rs and it is just perfect.

I'll try and take some pics of the cutting for future reference if anyone plans on doing this.

I'm here for you if you need any advice or tips. Making the baffle is a bit tricky but you'll do fine. It will likely take multiple tweaks to get it just right. You'll cut, test fit, cut, test fit....over and over till it's right. Make sure your overhang isn't so much that when the seats fold down the hinge pinches the edge. That took me a while to get right too.

 

please do not make such a badass enclosure then disrespect it with crappy shallow mount subs, and plastic rockfords? so many better options out there
