Hey I don't mean to cut anyone here if you want to use synthetic go ahead. I noticed at walmart the oil prices have went through the roof !!!! Valvoline synthetic is up to $30.00 a 5 quart jug and regular valvoline and pennzoil are $4.00 a quart mabey the synthetic is a better buy. Anyways Valvoline is plain nuts!!!! there prices are higher then just about anyone and I always had good luck with it!! May have to switch brands if this keeps up.

Have used synth since it was new (99k now), usually Castrol. But it really doesn't matter as long as you change it occassionally. I heard anicdotal evidence that changing @ 10k is plenty when using synth. I usually change @ 5-6K. Tolerences are so tight in newer motors that very little fuel gets past the rings and that is what ages motor oil.

Have always used Dino.. I don't keep vehicles long enough to worry about how its going to run at 100K miles. I barely put 5k a year on the TACO.

Go to Walmart...Look for the cheapest 5 quart jug of 5w-30 full synthetic oil (usually Quaker State unless there is a sale). Buy it. Done. Engine runs fine and will last just as long as any other engine using any other full synthetic oil. :D

This was true when synthetic oil was 5x the price of regular oil. Now regular oil prices have skyrocketed the last several years, there's little if no price advantage any more.

I'm not reading all 39 pages, but I'll add my .02.

In the last car that I liked, i switched it to synthetic. I first used Royal Purple. I then decided to switch to Mobil 1 because it was more readily available and cost effective. I never had any issues with either. I actually came to prefer the Mobil 1 over the more expensive alternatives. It always seemed to come out relatively clean, even if i went 1500 miles over the manufacturers recommended intervals. The car ran smooth and never had any issues. I sold it to a friend because I was ready to upgrade, and he totalled it within the first 3 months of ownership.

Now, my wife works for a subsidiary of ExxonMobil so I get a discount. Looks like I will be using nothing but Mobil 1 after my ToyotaCare runs out.

I use Wolf's Head sythetic oil. Most of you have probably not heard of it but this is the stuff we use in our farm equipment and we have a John Deere 4555 tractor that has over 14,000 hours on it and John Deere 4560 that has 12,000 hours and are still running strong with no major repairs done to any of them if you want proof I'll take pictures of the hour gauges lol

Ok, electric furnaces are very common place now ... but gas heat is more cost effective and efficient. So ya, a candle is better than electric.

Just because something is new and different doesn't make it better.

For me, synthetic is for my severe use engines (track bikes) or turbo'd applications (my car). The truck and all my other small motors get dino.

usually use rotella t synth in everything. very good oil and cheaper then most of the ones it outperforms. and ironically many race teams, no matter what it actually says on the stickers, use it.
There is another high performance oil, also used by race teams with other stickers on them, that I have used in my race bike in the past. It's used in aeronautics and high performance applications, I can't remember the name but it's expensive and very hard to come by.
