making inner fenders

so the plastic of my inner fender is gone, previous owners felt it unnecessary, and some of you may tell me the same, but alas i wouldn't be asking if i thought them pointless


any ideas to make em, cheap? i was thinking for a base use some cardboard, then spray heavily with some plastidip of sorts, layer it up real good so its thick, and doesnt need the cardboard to hold its shape. How strong/flexible is this stuff? ideas?!

 

Not strong and bad idea. Your welcome to try it though. Maybe do sheep metal real thin. When they tub cars for bigger wheels ect. Someone on here used trailer fenders inside his engine bay.

 

When I was big into s10's people would use trailer fenders.

 

Yeah mini trucks use em. A while ago I saw a truck with real real this sheet metal cant remember the gauge but it was cheap and he hand bent and looked good.

 

Junk yard and get a set for like 10 bucks you would have more money in building your own imo

 

im just lookn to rebuild the ones that i used to have, mainly the rear of the fronts, as mud and shit gets flung up into my door track and such, and because of this wind tunnel there is ALOT of roadnoise.

 

And you think you can do that with plasti dip? Go to a junkyard is your best bet. Or ghetto rig some rubber from home depot but it will look shitty.

 

gonna have to ghetto. i was under impression that plasti was flexible. ive never used the stuff so forgive me. All our local junkyards are a bust, all toyotas are purchased wholesale when they come into any junkyard.

 

From my experience plasti dip sucks. Making a cardboard mold and spraying 100 layers will get you no where but pissed off. Your best bet if you cant get anything at local junk yards is to get thin gauge sheet metal from home depot or lowes (or any store like that) and make templates from paper or card board the trace to the metal and bend. Once bent in place find a way to fasten it inside the fenders (take it to a welder or screws or bolts your choice really). You can buy the plasti dip and try it but you will just be wasting your time. Your best bet is sheet metal, or finding someone on here who is selling a set of fenders (insides of course).

 

I was looking online for some plastic that would cover the front of the wheel wells as mud and all sorts of debris get splashed up on the turn signal lights and I came across a variety of sites that sold inner fender well stuff. Take a look online. Some of it was a bunch of cheap (I'm sure Chinese rip-off) stuff but the prices were very reasonable and I'm sure it would suit your needs. I didn't find what I wanted so I might just make my own. I have some plastic called sintra (3mm ~1/8") that I can cut, heat and bend which should work and if not then find some thin metal.

thx guys. ive visted almost every junkyard here in town, and they just dont have any toyotas. Sense we dont have a rust problem, vehicles get sold whole before they even get to get picked over.well, tacomas that is.

 

I've only seen one tacoma in my local junkyard...lots of GM and Chrysler though...

 

For the OP... You can do something sort of like what you mentioned in the beginning, and make them out of fiberglass. You'll need to coat the cardboard well with mold release, so it'll need to be fairly thick cardboard. It's not going to be all that cheap though by the time you get all the supplies you need, but if you research it enough, who knows ?

 

Nick have you tried the truck and van only yard?

 

yeah. I went lookn for parts a few months ago. Came accross two 4 runners, but both were autos, and HEAVILY stripped.

Buddy works at a junkyard, he was telling me they dont even put tacos out on the lot, they already have buyers for them
