while we're on this subject: I saw a program awhile ago. if it is ever on again make it a point to watch it. it was called "social insecurity". don't remember all the points, but one sticks in my mind. when first set up the average death age of a man was 66 yrs. you could only start collecting at 65. HUMMM! pay into for 47 yrs.,or more, collect,on average, for 1 yr. it had lots of money, wonder why!!! very, very interesting documentary. this may never be on again, too much info on how it got to where it is.

Hi Carl, Didn't see the show, but will keep an eye open for it again... sounds real interesting:)! At one time they had so much money in SS they decided to "borrow" some for other things "they felt they needed thefunds for" and it just seems to have snowballed:eek:!! It's like starting a college fund for your kid and promising he'll be able to afford Harvard and then borrow some money for a new car and then borrow some for a vacation and before you know it...... he can't even afford a Community College:ohsnap:!!!!! Thats SS!!!!!! Ken

    Thanks Ken,
It's my home away from home....way away!
Primosten, Croatia. My wife's parents are originally from there and spend three months a year when they are not in SoCal. Their house has been in the family for 300 years and will eventually be left to us. You can live like kings and queens on very little money. Lobster tails for about 5 dollars and an incredible bottle of local wine for a buck.

You do realize that when SS was started and the payout was at age 65 the life expectancy was only 62. The government was betting that you would die before you collected.

The only politician that would vote to do away with SS does not want to be reelected.

that age is even better than the one I gave. same principle, take in lots, pay very little out. maby the next bump will be from 72 to 90. that should keep it solvent for awhile. saw something, not too long ago,and probablly on the business channel. they had SS checks, just printed, and were flipping through them, like the edge of cards. I would say the majority of those checks were under 1k.

*wipes drool off chin* Nice place

I thought it was 67, but I know what you are saying...

Used to be like 10 paying in and one taking out, but now with us boomers the ration is like 3 or 4 paying in for each payment out. It's been awhile since I heard this, so my numbers are probably off

What a gorgeous home and place!! I spent several nights sleeping on a cot at an airfield in Zagreb while deploying my battalion to Bosnia in '96. We did final vehicle checks there and then drove to Slavonski Brod for a final overnight. We did final combat checks, distributed ammo and then crossed a Bailey bridge in Bosnia and headed to Tuzla.

At this point, I'm not counting on SS - just hope that they don't decide that they were just kidding about that Army retirement thingy they promised.

With the Army retirement you are probably ok.

Private sector retirement plans took a big hit with the 2008 depression. Seems the corporate owners raided the plans and with the stock market fall the plans went insolvent or were underfunded.

It is in your own best interest to save for your retirement and if SS is still around then you will have some decent pin money.

    Thanks!
My wife and I spent 2 months in Primosten in '96. It was still a little crazy then with the Serbs, but they didn't really do any damage along the Dalmatian coast. They tried and did bomb some of the oldest Cathedrals and buildings in the country in the northern part.
We always do a trip up to Zagreb when we're there...pretty cool city.
