If gas mileage was my only concern...

Lets say I was able to upgrade from my 95 Ford Ranger to a 4x4 Taco at this very moment (I wish) and gas mileage was my main concern. Would the mpg's of an automatic 2.7 really be that much better than an automatic 3.4?

I'm currently getting 23-24 in my 2wd 4 cyl Ranger and I know a 4x4 pickup would probably never see those numbers, but I just don't think I could deal with or afford 14-16 mpg's on a regular basis. I hope this post makes sense and I'd appreciate any feedback you guys could throw my way.

 

i get around 18 combined with a 3.4l manual 5 speed 4x4. My dad with the 4 door 3.4L automatic gets about 20

 

I'm just curious. Is your dad easier on his truck which is why his gas mileage is a little bit better? I'm only asking because most folks claim that a manual always gets better mileage than an automatic.

 

i thought so too i will say i prolly drive a little harder but i also turn mud terrains and he has michelin ms2's on his and he does more highway driving i do a lot of combined i can hit 20 mpg on the hw also mine is geared lower rpms for 75 on hw are 2900 for mine for his auto its like 2200-2300

 

I get 23-25 mpg with my 2011 2.7 4x4 A-cab 5-speed. A few times I have broke the 26 mark.

 

70 mph with the cruise on 22 mpg highway.... city only 17.9--18.1 mpg V6 Auto.Winter it drops a bit in town.

 

bout the same on my dads with 290000 miles with no real issues on an 02

 

I have a 3.4 with a manual transmission, 32s, ARB bar and I get 22 in the summer and 18 in the winter.

My old 96 had the 2.7 (also manual, etc.) and it got 19 summer and 17 winter so I would recommend 3.4L.

 

in all reality, each truck runs a bit different and it depends on how you drive it too.

After i did the deckplate mod, cleaned my MAF, Seafoam, and new exhaust, im at about 19 combined now. Before i had like 16.

i have the 3.4l w 5spd.

 

I'm pretty anal about my mileage, calculating it every tank. I get a very consistant 23 1/2 mpg's every tank. I'm in a '04 2.7L 4x4 5spd. I'd have to imagine an automatic 2.7L would do worse... how much worse, idk...

 

My 2001 3.4, Auto., 4WD xtra cab never got over 19 mpg... 16 most of the time.

 

i have a 5 lug (non pre runner non-4x4) xtra cab 2.4 auto. i get 16 or 17 mpg combine if i want to break 20 i have to drive like a grandma or use the whole tank on the highway.... the road i take to work has a high speed limit at 70 so you have to drive 75+ not to get ran over which probably attributes to my less than average fuel economy. i have the deck plate mod and and a upgraded muffler but the gains were maybe 1 to 2 mpg. if mpg is a concern stay away from the 2.4 except for a reg cab with a 5 speed... you'd prolly be cool then

 

Our UG says 22ish in a 99 4x4 with 31's, deckplate, 3"lift

edit and it's not like it's driven for milage. 2.7 5 speed

my '02 3.4L auto avg. about 20mpg when i had all-season tires. now with mt tires, i get 18.5mpg on a good tank.

my brother's '02 2.7L auto gets about 21-22mpg consistently.

 

I have an 08 Tacoma double cab prerunner v6 and I tryed a thush and a flowmaster muffler and got 2 mpg less on average. So I went back to my stock muffler which I got 21 on average. Also my truck is automatic and it shifted funny without the backpressure of the exhaust.

 

Is his a 4x4?

 

20-22 city with my 2.7 5 speed 4x4.

 

Sorry, I forgot to note that and also add:

- 3.4L is 4wd with ~228k mile
- 2.7L is 2wd only ~250k miles, rebuilt motor at ~245k

Both owned since new.
