    Hello my Californian friends,

I'm going to be heading to La Jolla for a conference in October. My wife is going with me as well. There are planned activities and dinners for most of the conference (including a round of golf at Torrey Pines), but we have a full day Saturday to ourselves.

What's a good one-day place to go/see/do in the area? Suggestions on a good restaurant to take my wife to (quick, tasty lunch and maybe a more formal dinner?)

I don't think I'll have a rental car, so is there a god public transportation system? Thanks everyone.

If you will be in La Jolla most of the things you wil want to see/eat/do will be within walking distance or a short cab ride.

For lunch maybe the Karl Strauss Brewing as that should be quick its on the corner of Wall & Herschel. For dinner I really like George's at the Cove its right on Prospect Street close to the La Jolla Cove. Or even Roppongi which is on Prospect as well.

Things to do, really just walk around the cove and shopping areas, its really a beautiful place to see. Make sure to look at the cove and the baby seal beach area.

Public transportation in San Diego sucks. You pretty much need a car if you want to do anything in this city.

If you're looking to stay in the La Jolla area, a good place to eat at for a "formal" dinner would be Donovan's Steak and Chop House. Best steak I've ever had. :D

There's not really anything to do in La Jolla other than walk around, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. You can just chill at the beach all day if the weather is nice enough. Your best bet would be to get a rental car though, so you can actually go out and explore the city a little.

to many to list, check the build thread
My wife and I stayed downtown La Jolla last fall and fell in love with the sushi joint Zenbu. We ate at a crab joint as well but i cant remember the name of it. Check out Peter Lik gallery as well!!!! amazing landscape photographer. And get ready to see the most insane sports cars ever. Every other car is either a Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bentley, Maserati.

This is true, but if you only have one day and want to get a relaxed full day out of it you don't want to be rrunning around San Diego County all day. I say just stay in La Jolla, walk around to the shops/beaches eat lunch and dinner and have a "relaxing" day after the conferences you have had.

Now if he wants to come back to San Diego for 3 to 5 days year get a rental and explore, but 1 day won't support that.

I've not heard of it before, the trend with restaurants here is most go through a re-branding every few years to stay current. Only a few have names that stand the test of time.

Yeah.......I wouldn't suggest that. The danger level down there is off the charts, no need getting kidnapped and ransomed off

Besides that, it's a dump. And you'd need to carry your passport.

Thanks for the ideas so far folks. I'm definitely going to avoid Mexico :anonymous:

Sounds like La Jolla has a lot of shopping and beaches, two things that will keep my wife happy

Took this picture a week ago yesterday at La Jolla... Def. go see the seals. I could have spent all day at the beech watching them. Very interesting/entertaining animals to watch. While we were watching them you could see people kayaking with them and swimming. Would def. be something I would try out!

So Georges at the Cove doesn't have any reservations left for this Saturday night. :(

Any other suggestions for a fancy dinner with the wife?
