Probably a new 11. I keep 'em for years and years so the model year isn't a big deal to me and I'm sure I can get a better deal on an 11. Although that new "Entune" is really interesting.

I didn't test drive any other models, but my TRD Sport is incredibly smooth. Couldn't be happier.

Another vote for the SR5. Has all your creature comforts without the extra cost. FYI all the 2011 SR5s here have the tow package. Don't know for sure if it a standard option for the SR5 and TRDs or not but I have yet to see a newer one without the package. As for the power port you can have them add one.

It is much easier to negotiate a price since the manufacturers offer packages instead of individual options. That day of picking and choosing exactly what you want is long gone. Go to the Toyota site and build the truck you want then get a price break down from one of the many automotive sites or use Consumer Reports. Find out what everything costs and go from there.

Not much. But when we do, it's really a mess. We have no snowplows or other snow removal equipment. This past winter we were snowbound in my house for almost a week. All I needed to do was pull a hill just a block from my house and a 4WD would've done it. Don't want to go through that sort of thing again.

Besides, who knows when I might decide to go play a little? Snow's a good reason to tell my wife why I need 4WD and if I have it..... :D

X2 That snow last year had us snowed in for several days. Have a big hill in my sub. and the only people that got up the hill had 4x4. It doesn't happen often but it's nice to have the 4x4 when you need it. Plus we like to make trips to the Smokey's in the fall/winter and have got caught in unexpected snow up in the mountains.

I don't think you quite understand the difference........Your bad really. Some people don;t need drive on all four wheels but like the options and higher view. Basically they are giving up two drive wheels they may never need for and a rear ocker they may never need. But have all the niceties of the TRD packages

A fake hood scoop is just that..... A "fake" 4 wheel drive offers far more benefits...

    Learning is fun....try it

Sounds like you're in the market for a 4wd SR5. Some of the things you don't want will be included with that version, but you will get the things you do want.

And, as a side benefit, you may find yourself really liking somethings you don't want right now, like those steering wheel audio controls.

I traded my long bed access cab with the off road package for a double cab short bed with the off road package.

I think the DC rides better than the AC and the 4 doors and back seat make it more practical and easier to live with. It also has a better ride and is quieter than my Honda Odyssey.

I do miss the long bed, though. On the other hand, it would be tough to fit a long bed double cab in my garage. Always something...

Good luck with your decision and with Toyota! Please post some pics when you get it!

What is fake about having more ground clearance? It is a truck after all... Trucks should not be as low to the ground as a sedan if you ask me.

Edit: Was this guy talking about the Prerunners? That's what it seemed to me. Anyway to get on topic: SR5 sounds like a great choice for you OP. I'm stuck between that and the sport package on the truck I'll buy soon. I'm not sure if the improved look of the sport package (the paint matched stuff - could care less about the fake scoop) is worth the price tag. Side markers on the mirror would be a nice plus as well... I'm still undecided!!

    back to bone stock.
    60 years old?

crap, i'm gonna be the mother effen hen...
how is your retirement looking? you settin pretty? honesty, i would STILL look at buying a used truck. the thing will last forever, and you save alot of money. now that you have a small wad of money, maybe you can look for a newer used truck?

dunno. i dont know you and i dont know your situation, but if i were 60, i would be squirreling away crazy. i actually want to retire at 60, but i dont know how that will play out.

either way, get the best truck now, that you can afford.

    How's retirement looking?

    Depends on who you ask.

I've done all the calculators and budgets and "what if" scenarios and they all say I'm in good shape. Matter of fact, they say I could've retired two years ago. That's why I didn't want to buy an expensive one earlier; didn't want car payments. But two things have stopped me from retiring now:

    1) With the national debt going up like it's got a titan rocket booster hooked to it, I worry that the lunatic in the White House is going to crank up the printing presses and make all our dollars worth a quarter. Course, if that happens, I'd have to work until I'm 225...so it's pretty much a moot point.
    2) The other is my wife. She's scared to death we'll be eating dog food when we're 80. So I told her I'd work until I'm 62 so I can collect SS. In fact, my boss asked me just a couple of days ago if I'd consider working part time for a few years after I get ready to retire, so that may be an option.

But your point is well taken. The problem is that Tacos have such good resale, you have to get a REAL used one to knock much off. Try to find a 4x4 double cab (particularly if you have to be picky about color to please my lady) and in my area you're looking at $22-25k for one with 50k miles on it. Just a little more and you're in a new one.

Actually, that's one of the things I don't like about the sport package. I really don't like that scoop. It's not so much that it's fake...most hood scoops are. It's that it's on a truck. To me, that's like putting a spoiler on the back of a truck. Dude! It's a TRUCK! It hauls stuff, it gets dirty. If you want a Camaro, go buy one.

Gotta say, this post really does worry me. I'm looking for quiet and comfortable. Love the looks of the Taco and a lot of the features, but if it's going to be a rough-riding tin can with a lot of noise...it may not be the truck for me.

Mine is smooth as glass! It's only three weeks old and still bone stock. Went for a long ride today with wifey, dog and good friend in the backseat. Immediately the friend commented on how smooth and quiet the ride was. I told him to look over and check out the speedo/tach.....we were going 48mph and the tach was sitting on 1600rpm = great mpg.

I was the poster that said I wasn't interested in the "fake" scoop. Only I typed "non-functional" scoop. If it was actually functional I would probably still not want it. My Silver 09 Taco had the scoop and the angle would literally blind me at certain times of the day when the sun was straight up. I seriously thought about painting the scoop flat black. I guess I hit a nerve with the guy that responded with me having a "fake" 4X4....

I would suggest to the OP to go drive an 11 Taco. Not just around the block but tell the salesguy you want to go out on the highway and really check it out. If they don't want to, show them your checkbook and go to another dealer!
