Why does Toyota list the Prerunner 4x2 with the same MPG as the 4x4??

try dropping down to 89 octane and see what happens. we have a compression ratio of 10:1. they recomend 87 for up to 9:1. it makes sense that if our engines aren't built to utilize all the potential extra engergy in high octane gas, then you're wasting fuel and not utilizing all of its potential energy when you put it in an engine with a lower compression ratio. I've tried 87, 89, 91, and 93 and so far my truck runs best and gets teh best mileage out of 89. Toyota spends billions on research and development and engineering. If they didnt design our truck to use 93, then its probably not meant to use 93. drop down to 89 for 3 tanks and drive like an old woman and see if you get better mpg

 

I used AC constantly during the summer with 89 octane and got average of 18 mpg. now that its cooled off and i dont use the AC i get about 20

 

So far, the data i'm collecting supports nd's point. lower octane averages better mpg. That's only with about 250 data points but there is a slight trend.

 

i did 2 tanks of 89 before my trip to arkansas and i didnt notice a difference, i filled up with 89 yesterday but i was pissed yesterday so i was driving like a dick and wasting gas doing 80 around town

 

87 octane still gives me about 17mpg driving absolutely slow as sin the whole tank

 

I'm averaging 18.5 on 87, thats mostly stop and go traffic with a manual trans.

 

Physically speaking the lower the octane the more powerful it is. The reason high octane is used in higher compression engines isn't because its "more powerful" its because it is more stable and when compressed more it is less likely to "pre-detonate" causing engine damage.

 

i agree with most of what you're saying, but i wouldnt say that 87 is the most powerful, just the most volatile...but then again, the reason you make higher hp numbers with a higher octane is because you can advance the timing since the 93 octane is much more stable and doesnt present all of the detonation issues that 87 would have under the same timing conditions

 

I didn't say you could harness the power I said it was more powerful as in more combustible.

Premium is the recommended fuel grade for the 08s and back I think. The question is is it financially prudent to pay for premium with the better MPG......
