ok, so me and my lady are looking into alternative birth control methods. she is currently using the pill but for some reason her copay is about to go from 25 a month to $50 a month. i offered to go to the doctor and get my junk snipped. she said no in case we ever want kids (for some reason she frowned on my idea of freezing my sperm in an ice tray in her freezer...) So she looked into the nuva ring. apparently it can fall out or after sex i could end up being the one wearing it. I suggested an IUD. She went to her gyno and he said that an IUD was just for women who have had children. But since then, we've found out that this is not the case.

One of my friends asked her doc about it and he said no. then she moved to MA and while there, her gyno said it was ok so she got one. She changed gyno's and the other one was actually pissed that she had one and said the doctor that inserted it was negligent. since then she has moved back to SC and her gyno down here says its no big deal either way.

so my question is this. do any of you have an iud? if so what are your thoughts? how effective is it? any side affects? and most importantly, why would some doctors say its no big deal while other doctors act like it's terrible or say you cant have one until you have a baby? I welcome all personal stories or stuff you've read (from a reliable source, no rumors please). also, if we have any guys on here with ladies with experience please feel free to post.

Can't help with the IUD -- Wife's on the ring -- it's good... 6 years together and no baby... and has only "fallen out" once...

my wife is on the patch.she slaps it on her butt. even if your copay goes up to $50 is still waaaaaaaaaay cheaper than having a child, believe me(4 month old at home). good luck with whatever route you choose.

Before I got snipped, my wife took a shot every three months called neoplan (I think that's the name of it). She got it at Planned Parenthood for around $50 per quarter. It made her gain a lot of weight though.

    pulling out always works.

Is she on Caremark? They just started saying that if you get the same prescription for 3 months in a row, then you have to go to CVS to get the best price.

I'd have her call her insurance company and find out what's up with that and how she can get it cheaper.

We did some research and the one she found is more affective than a visectomy and tying the tubes and is good for 5 years. Its the one that look like a T-handle allen wrench. Its called Merana.

I think Caremark and CVS have some sort of partnership. I used to have them and I got my blood presser and a bunch of antibiotics and other cold medicine and it was about $4

we haven't even looked into the patch, but she has sensitive skin, even bandaids mess up her skin and she gets a rash around it. so i doubt the patch would be an option

thats a good suggestion, i'll have to ask her if she has looked into that

    best suggestion yet :)

my friend stayed at his brothers and his wife one time. my buddy had his gf with him. the wife found it in the bed after they had left and didn't know what it was. she thought it was a hair scrunchie and picked it up. another friend had a gf with it and said when he pulled out he had it on instead of her having it in. just stuff like that, but i've heard alot of those types of stories

it has something to do with them trying to push generics. i think the generic form just came out so the normal stuff went up in price. normally she doesn't mind generics but she has had some side effects from generic birth control before that she didn't have with the namebrand equivalent.

    thats freaking great!

yeah, i know they are suppose to be extremely effective. does your wife/gf already have a kid? do you know why gyno's would disagree on whether its ok before children or not?

Well can't help much since I was taken to the vet and fixed.
But since the pill works good for her why don't you just pay half of the co-pay. I know you all are looking for differents means, but if it works why mess with it.
