BTW the only thing the big 3 have in this country is corporate offices....I'll give one thing to Ford its that there marketing group knows how to tell it...if anyone notices when they show the eco-boost in the commercials they'll never mention its a V-6...

yeah, their ranger has "best in class" fuel economy.

Maybe for a 4CYL, i doubt their V6 is better than ours.

    bullcrap.

Ranger isn't in the same class I don't think. The Dakota and Colorado are more the same class as the Tacoma IMO.

Actually they`re all in the same class and IMO they are all great trucks, good and bad things about all of them. I owned a 2001 ranger and i loved that truck just it was to small for us so i sold it but if it wasn't for that i would still have it today, very dependable.

No it is not the titan here is a link from autoblog.com outlining the fact that the production of the tacoma has moved to the san antonio plant because of the NUMMI plant closure and to fill the production void that the tundra is not filling.

"Production of the Toyota Tacoma resumed in July after tooling was moved from its former home at NUMMI in Fremont, California to San Antonio, Texas. The Texas factory is also home to the full-size Tundra which has not lived up to sales expectations, leaving lots of extra capacity."

"Adding Tacoma production in Texas cost Toyota $100 million and brought 1,000 new jobs to the facility. Toyota spent about $1.3 billion on the San Antonio plant and tooled it up for 300,000 units a year. However, the Tundra has never even hit half that mark. With all of Toyota's North American pickup production now consolidated at San Antonio, the plant could finally come close to its capacity.

This is certainly because when toyota launched the new tundra, their aim was to target the big 3 manufacturers. Thus comparing the new trucks from the big 3 to the toyota makes sense. If toyota is going to target Ford,Chevy and Dodge 1/2 tons, then obviously the big 3 are going to compare their trucks to the tundra.

I am glad you are happy with your purchase. There is no more a satisfying feeling than being happy with what you paid for. Congradulations on your truck I hope you enjoy it for years to come. At this point lets just agree that our personal preferences are different.

Good. They fixed the bed bounce. I had not seen that article and since they corrected it for the 2011 model year and up this has changed my perception of the tundra. We will see what toyota can do in the coming years to improve the tundra.

So should it be a 4.6 or 5.7 purchase?
OP was talking his Dad knows he wants a Tundra now so I am curious on the debate for the engine size. I am towing but in winter time & don't know if I want all that hp. Any insight on towing 2500+/- enclosed trailer in inclement weather? This is the only towing we do. I'm pricing a 4.6L. Input??

Takes 2+ years for plans and development. This was under-way before 9/11 hit. It hits, economy in general takes a dump and ALL car makers are selling less vehicles. No surprise they are selling less. I also think they though they would sway more people away and they didn't. The combo really killed sales in general.

2500 is nothing. Get the 5.7. I know a guy that got a 4.6 and he says he wished he got the 5.7 since gas mileage isn't that great.

Why do you keep repeating Tundra will never compete with domestic half tons. They already made a step up with the second gen, it takes time to perfect everything. Wait for the 3rd gen and then judge or maybe even 4th gen...how long is F150 and other domestic half tons around? My point is everything takes time and even though they did not meet their goals with the second gen, it definitely wasn't a fail, but a pretty decent truck in the end.

Thanks Roy for the suggestion. I was trying to keep my costs down & test drove both of them. I loved the 5.7 engine but could not get the numbers to work for my deal. So I did pull the trigger on the 4.6. I am going to get a cap like yours. It looks like I will be able to fit whatever I want to in that bed. I am stoked!

Congrats on the purchase! The 4.6 is no slouch. I test drove one and they felt pretty similar off the line. The cap was the best investment I've made. I only had one time I couldn't fit something big enough in the back. I was worried that it would really limit what I could haul, but it hasn't. Save $2K+ if you want a painted one like mine though. They sure aren't cheap!

Okay, Circumstances have changed! We're still getting another vehicle, but it's not the tundra, in fact it's not a toyota at all.

    It's a Volvo! :D

To make a long story short, family friend is moving to a far away state and can't drive it there, so she's selling it to us.

It's a 2001 Volvo S60 2.4T with 147K miles, Does anyone have any knowledge of Volvos, particularly the 01 S60.

I'm just worried about things going bad and Volvo's reliability, it's already almost at 150K miles, but it's considerably cheaper than buying a 30,000$ pickup truck, and the insurance will be cheaper. I'm sure she's maintained it well and according to Volvo's maintenance requirements.

Everything works, all the electronics, it drives fine. I test drove it around the neighborhood. We do know that new tires will be needed.

What exactly has it already taken from the big 3? That is something you failed to mention. BTW, most of their commercials are comparing of each other. I think you have been watching too many dealer videos on youtube

To all that are mentioning of waiting on time for toyota to improve and catch up with the domestics, do yall not think about what time does to improve the domestics? Say 10 years from now, the domestics would also be improved and still leading in the full size truck market. Think about it.
