4.0 power differences

Hi guys,

I'm still new to the tacoma world forums and I've only had my 08 for a few months but I had a question about the power differences in the 4.0 v6. I was at the dealer today and I noticed the FJ, 4 Runner, that use the 4.0 make considerably more power and torque than the taco 4.0? I'm assuming its mostly due ECU programming but I was wondering if there is a simple way to squeeze out the same amount of power by having the ECU re flashed or something?

 

Exactly. And they get better gas mileage too. My wife's 08 4Runner gets 22mpg to my 16mpg. I still like my Taco better.

 

Same size cab (roughly) with more bed.

Also, longer wheel base = longer drive train = more weight.

FJ = 4343 lb
Double Cab = 4190 lb
Access Cab = 4070 lb

I'd guess the FJ has better aerodynamics, though FJs don't look very aerodynamic to me.

 

Pretty sure the tacoma is the lightest of the three

 

This is what google told me also for curbweight of 4x4 versions of these. Also the engine has 19 more HP but it has a few less ft lbs of torque so you'll never feel a difference. And to add one more blow to that dual VVTI you won't feel it till your in about 5,900 RPM and above range...

 

Basically it looks good on paper for someone who doesn't know any better... But in the end its the same thing...

 

Isn't the V6 Rav4 the fastest prodUction Toyota right now?

 

FJ+4Runner= more power than the Tacoma and weigh more than the tacoma but weight shouldn't have anything to do with power output though?

I own both a 2011 Tacoma and 2011 4runner limited and yeah you feel a difference I don't think its any faster but the dual vvti does seem to respond a little better at higher rpm. It was smoother to accelerate from say 60-80 for passing. At least before I put the sc on the Tacoma

 

Yeah I can agree with that. I'm shopping for a FJ right now and I test drove a 09 and a 10 on the same freeway the same day. I think they felt pretty much the same to be honest. I'm sure there is a tiny difference but its hard to tell. Funny too cause toyota's web site shows the 2012 FJ has 12 more FT lbs of Torque then the 2010 but both have 260 HP? I have print out's of the specs of the 2009 I test drove vs. the 2010 and the 2010 shows less torque but more HP? I'm wondering why now?

 

just means it won't feel as fast but weight makes no difference in the actual HP and Torque #'s

 

I thought so too, but then I looked online about weight comparisons, was completely wrong, the site I read though might not be 100% accurate

 

Wow thanks guys. I didn't know the Tacoma didn't get the Dual VVT-i. Makes sense now that I know that.

 

i have an 11 tacoma and we drove an 11 FJ. the FJ didn't feel any quicker, if as quick, as my tacoma. The short distance we drove it, it felt a little smoother riding but we only drove it on paved surfaces.

Its possible that the Tacoma more loss of power to the wheels than the FJ due to longer drive shaft but I am guessing its not that much. It looks like the new 4.0 is more efficient and that actually makes it a lot more appealing than the extra ponies which seems to basically be a wash due to the loss of torque.
