Not to drag this out... bu the manual says you can shift into 4H so long as your speed is below 62MPH (100KM), and shift back into 2H at any speed. Your example is a Jeep, and is only 1 example. Like the guy with the Chevy, I used to drive my Mazda for extended periods on the highway in 4H (when the snow cleared I didn't switch back, as the clear sections were only 10-20 km between bad sections), and never had an issue. Your Jeep may have been a one off case. Everyone's experience and opinions may very.

It's not an opinion. It's fact. Part time 4WD on hard packed pavement with any degree of turning will cause stress on the drive train and transfercase. Argue all you want, the physics are sound.

Some Trucks come with fulltime 4WD. Chevy has this on some, and so do some Jeeps. They are fine on hard pavement doing turns.

Part time is not unless you're going in a straight line. Just because you haven't broken anything yet doesn't mean you're not setting it up to fuck you in the ass later down the road. But hey, it's your $40K truck. Light on fire, and drive it off into the bay of Fundy for all I care.

I'm going to take care of mine so it'll outlast the moon.

Hey I'm not trying to argue, I understand the binding issues with modern part time 4 wheel drive systems and the potential for damage from misuse. But with all the "I accidentally left it in 4H, did I break it?" posts on the board, I've only ever seen pictures of your Jeep. The OP did say Highway, not the Monaco F1 course.

Also never use a locker in high traction situations like rock crawling. It is proven to cause stress on drivetrain parts that wont occur with a limited slip. It is also a fact you will see broken axle shafts from using a locker at many times greater a rate than ruined transfer cases from use in high traction situations.

See how you have to keep it in perspective?

Alright, I see what you're getting at. Like I said in my first post, his truck is more than likely fine. But the potential for catastrophic failure is there and increases with each instance. However, from this little episode I have a sneaking suspision that the OP will be rather vigilant when activating 4WD from now on.

No, you're just being a douche. If you have high traction you're not supposed to be using a locker. Nice try numb nuts. If you're a good driver, you recognize the need for the locker, activate it just before, use it, then turn it off promptly.

Krazie is correct in his comments.
Will being locked in 4hi cause damage immediately? Maybe not, but being as the drive train is locked front and rear (in 4x4), the chance is there. And the chance is high....

Sometimes I use 4 wheel drive to un-launch, but not always...on this particular launch, the pavement was quite steep and slippery, and there is a bit of a hump to lift the trailer over, so 4 wheel stops me from spinning the tires. I only used 4 high, and no locker.
Normally I always remember to put the truck back in 2 wheel drive.

So far I've added an Advance folding bed cover and since removed it. Gave it to my son in Maine, he has an 05 2wd. GT perfect fit seat covers. Weathertech floor mats and window vent visors. Waag center brush/grill guard. Hose clamp tailgate mod. Turned off the seat belt chime. Added Ultra-Gauge. Trailer hitch. Softopper. Replaced sun visors with slide out style. Toyota bed extender. Had Firestone Destinations and now Michelin LTX AT2 in stock size. More mods to come; Fog lights, locking storage in bed, intermittent wipers. Now looking for Radio/HU upgrade. and maybe a lift way down the road.
Mine clunks at any speed. As have my other trucks. No biggie. You wont do it again so don't worry about it.
Now my girl friends daughter red-lined my engine twice trying to lean how to drive a standard. I think I lost 5k miles off the engine. ;) Smelled terrible.

    ^What he said.

Doesn't matter if he was in 4Lo or 4Hi. If anything it would have been better if he was in 4Lo cause he would have noticed far far sooner that he had 4WD engaged before he got down the highway. I know some smart ass is going to say 'But in 4Lo the engine speed is way faster than the actual speed.' I say, bite my hairy ass, that's why there's a rev limiter. And as soon as he redlined his truck, he would have stopped, looked, and noticed his truck was in 4WD.

    Alright, my ranting is over.

No, I just get really annoyed when people post blatant misinformation and even when corrected continue to argue in the face of reason and logic.

Not talking about you though Superman. More like that tard DevL.

And my justice shall be swift and unrelenting like the fist of an angry god, I shall smite them, and strike down furiously like the lepers and charlatans they are. None shall be spared. All will despair.

And pure cleansing light and knowledge will be all that remains when the ashes are swept away.
