Belts makin noise

This is probably an easy fix just wanted to ask and see if anyone has had there toyota do this before.

Im thinking my have my belt or belts 2 tight because when my truck is idling the belts squick and make a little bit of noise its not bad sounding just dosent sound like a toyota should

do i need to loose them? replace them?

 

When belts squeek like that - normally means they're not tight enough.
They're slipping on the pully's and causing the squeek.

Get under the hood and look at the belts and the pulleys. Look for obvious wear ...if you see nylon threads, gouges, rips, etc - time to replace them. Look at the pulley's - they should be consistantly smooth all around (no rough spots, etc).

Also - find a good length of belt where it's straight and flat and away from the pulley's. Grab the edges of the belt with your finger & thumb. Twist the belt. If you can twist the belt PAST the perpendicular point.....then the belt is too loose. You have 3 belts on the 1st gens - check all 3 belts for tightness.

I can't remember exactly - each 'accessory' (A/C, Alternator, Power steering pump) should have an adjustment point to tighten each belt. I can't remember exactly how the adjustment - but normally there will be a bolt that holds the adjustment and a threaded rod that makes the adjustment. It's been a good 4 years since I owned my 96....

Janster seemed to cover the issue pretty damn well, but not to be stupid, when checking the belts be sure the truck is OFF.

 

The adjuster bolt for the ac compressor belt is at the bottom of the engine compartment behind an idler pulley. Take off the skid plates and it's easily accessible. The adjuster for the power steering and fan belt is below and behind the power steering reservoir. I think, but I'm not 100% sure that you adjust the alternator belt by adjusting the alternator itself.

 

my belts are squeeking reallllllly bad. it just started like 2 days ago. i might have to try what you guys said.

Great, why did you post that? When I see stuff like that, I have to try it myself. Now, since I don't have an old VW Bug with a loose belt, I'll have to look for something else to try it on...... Well, it's been nice living for 46 years with 10 fingers....

 

My truck was doing the same thing go down to your local auto parts store buy some belt dressing and spray that on their while the truck is ideling goes right away.

 

belt dressing will only fix it temporarily.. might as well just replace all your drive belts... I had the same issue.. got real annoyed by it and went to my mechanic and got all 3 drive belts changed for $120

 

How temporarily are you talking about? I have gone 3k miles and the belts still dont squeek maybe the condition of the belts were different but it was a pritty solid fix for my truck.

 

Ha for me, it was 1 hour...

Then again, I just sprayed on the bottom open span that I could see from the top of the engine bay.. wasn't a thorough application..

 

jus took my truck down to a mechanic after having the same squeaking sound upon cold start ups. just had all of my belts replaced too. he told me my belts were lose and it would be $50 to tighten them, $50 to turn a wrench?

ha does anyone know the exact locations, maybe some pics of where the adjusting knobs are for my 02 3.4L? would be a BIG help!
