I feel ya partner, I used to be a waiter and a bartender. After having done both I usually overtip, to the tune of 25-30% as long as the service is decent. Sometimes more if I'm drinking. Also bad service is not always the fault of the server, sometimes people call in and the place is short staffed or they may have a large table, or demanding customers. As long as I don't see the waiter/waitress standing around talking to friends instead of gettin me another beer when I need it they'll get the maximum tip. I also like the fact that when I go into a joint the staff usually remembers me when I come in, so I get that personal touch on top of the regular service because they no they'll be compensated for it. My motto is if you don't have enough to tip, don't go out!

your state and mine do the same dumb thing of not letting us pump our own gas (which i believe is a life skill necessary for survival, i know of people who have never done it in their lives). we have a regional high end convenience store chain called Wawa, gas station coupled with a sandwich shop/deli/grocery store and they pay their pump boys 9+ an hour. every other gas station around here are owned and ran by sikhs or arabs. i would never even think about tipping them i dont tip people for things i can readily do myself like pumping gas, getting my own door, carrying my own luggage etc etc. as a server myself while getting through school anyone who gives me a crap tip (and I know Im good) deserves a flat tire or two on the way home

20-30% for me, i worked as a server, and i currently own a few restaurants. if it's piss poor service then it's a discussion with the manager, but otherwise 20-30%

Damn can't find it. The bureau of labor statistics post a yearly tip amount based of local CPI's... It varies from 15%-23% with the high ends being in like new york, boston, honolulu, and socal... Kinda interesting how the IRS keeps track of what ya'll are supposed to get tipped...

because they have to buy dumb stuff like a chrysler 300 and slap a bentley grill on it. I work at a cracker barrel and the stuff i see and have to put up with especially on sundays when they come flocking from church appalls me. I actually had one lady say among her lady friends (all black) as i am prebussing the table practically in her face that "i dont tip" and of course they all got split checks. Tips like that i find a young kid and give it to them i refuse to take tips like that, i wont take any joy knowing that i got such a crap tip but a little kid just got himself an candy and a soda

Id like to say I tip pretty good.

When its a big tab ill do 10% for shitty service. 15% for average. 20% for normal. and ill throw in more for exceptional service...i also tend to tip more for smaller tabs...like if im out with friends and just order a drink and an appetizer or something ill put like 5 bucks down on the 10 dollar meal...dunno why just always have.

and it has to be AWFUL for me not to tip.

I usually like to do either 15 or 20%. But if the service is only 5% worthy, then thats what they get. A tip is a gratitudy (sp?) to your service not a for sure raise.

The last time I went out to dinner the waitress thought she knew me and asked how much I made at my company. Let's just say she didn't get that big of a tip

I also tend to tip based on the race of the server.
