I voted 15 to 20% but I go above that when the service deserves it.:) I enjoy rewarding good service, but hate it when they add it to the bill when there is a party of 6 or more. The service always seems to suck when they add it to the bill.:(

Attend many Klan meetings? The vicious circle seems to be the "if black" types of comments coming from the white members to Canada's south.

And on topic, here in Nova Scotia, servers make min. wage, plus tips.

I used to be a waiter and made $2.90/hr so I know what it's like to work for tips. That being said, how I tip depends on the service. Things like having stacks of dirty plates just piling up, extremely long wait times between when they check in, long wait when you first sit down, etc irritate me more because I used to do their job. If they're excellent or really good and I can see they're swamped, 20%+, if they are lazy, forgetful, unattentive then the tip I leave will reflect it.

I tip 15%-20% if I get good service. If the service sucks 0!!!

Now I tip better at places I'm a regular at and they know me.

I usually tip bartenders better than that.....depending on the check 20-50% if the drinks are good and quick.

I almost always give 30-40% (or more, even, for superior service) for food, and at least $1 per drink to bartenders (I only drink beer).

    Believe me, I get remembered : )

OK, this is one of my pet peeve subjects.

First, I always tip appropiately and my wife say's too much a lot of the time. And I understand the concept of tipping as it existed in say, the 1700s or 1800s, to help small mom and pop inns survive in business.

But today, most are giant multimillion corporations and chains with CEOs and shareholders worth millions. So howcome they think it's fair to charge me $3 for a glass of coke and $9 for a plain burger with fries, THEN as if they aren't making money on that, they expect me to also pay their employees to bring it to my table.

I feel bad for the servers, but their big companies' greed is not my fault.

Another peeve is like one of the girls I dated...where she waitressed they have to split all tips at the end of the night. Thats BS! I tip the server I got...not the rest. And she said some of the other servers never got good tips because they were lazy.....they just fed off everyone else's tips.
    F THAT!

Not the server's fault...but still, just avoid those chains and eat locally owned whenever possible. : )

That all may be true, at least in her experience, but what about the busboy, kitchen staff... they are not at your table to get a share in the tip, that they also earned.

    Also a great point!

Kinda hard to do while traveling interstates (at least in the States), but certainly adds to the service/food quality/all around good time : )

    neglect, mostly.
lots of restaurants do the split and most of the time the customers never know. that has a lot to do with the how most people will tip with their credit card, and it's easier just to divide that number by the waiters and electronically put it right into their paycheck. . . and for me, it also depends on the service but i usually do 15%

20% for good or better service. 15% if the service was just ok. 0% if the service was horrible and they didn't care about it.

I tip well if service is good..... If service sucks, the tip is effected.

Over the years I have learned that most RICH people tip pretty chitty, and the people with less money will tip you with their last dollar. Poor people tip well!
