Just got new wheels put on yesterday. After driving on a curvy highway today I noticed a shuddering while on significant corners. Also, when braking heavily the truck did the same thing. Stopped numerous time to check lug nuts and what not and couldn't figure out wth was going on. When I finally got home 100 miles later I took a look at the UCA's. There seemed to be a spot where the tires rubbed the dirt off! This would explain the shuddering correct? Spring compresses on corners and while braking and UCA hits tire. I'm running 285/70/17 duratacs and the new wheels are 9" wide with a 4.5" BS. I was previously running the tires on tundra wheels which has a 5" BS and are 7.5" wide, ran this setup with a 1.25" spacer and had no problems. I'm running OME 881's in front with a 10mm top plate spacer. Never measured lift but I'd guess 2.25" ish? So would more lift stop the uca rubbing? Or aftermarket uca's? Or is the uca probobly not even causing the shuddering?lol. Hope somebody can shed some light for me! Here's a pic of the UCA and where it looks to be rubbed off.

Either get wheels with a different BS or get spacers. I'm running 15x8 wheels with 4" BS, the tires are 12.50 wide and would not rub the UCAs.

It's an 89 Toyota Pickup. I got some stuff done to it.. FJ axles going under it soon.
Aftermarket UCA's usually correct alignment/suspension geometry.
Sometimes they will correct rubbing. Usually not.

Cheapest way to fix is spacers(even at $100-200 a pair)
Expensive way is to buy new wheels with different backspacing(5"
    or trade your wheels.

More lift will fix it..but if you lift it more, you'll need aftermarket UCA's anyway...

    So it's a toss up.

I already have spidertrax but the reason I got new wheels was so I didn't have to use them anymore. I really don't want to use them now my front tires will be way too wide. And undefined 5" bs would bring the wheel closer to the uca's not farther. And I wont need new uca's if I lift it more. Plenty of people run a full 3" without aftermarket uca's. I just need to know if more lift will indeed fix the slight rub. If so ill just swap the 881's to 882's.

Ok I thought I was in the 2nd gen forum..lol. UCA's fix all your problems on 2nd gens.

Your right 1st gen you can get away with 3" lift no problem on stock ucas.

and again you got me on the wheels.

I think I need sleep..that 95db siren I just put in got to me.

    Thanks for correcting me! :)

yea but your new wheels only have 4.5'' bs. Before you had 5 right? minus the 1.25'' of the spacers so really your had 3.75 which is great for that size of tire. Just put the spacers back on

You don't need more lift or new UCAs.

I thought 4.5" bs was prime for our trucks on 285's. Like I said, the reason I just got wheels was to not have to run Spacers. I really don't want 3.25 BS up front. All I know is this sucks...really hope swapping to 882's will do the trick because I don't know what else to do. Don't think discount tire would let me exchange my rims or anything either.

It won't man lol just save yourself the money and put the spacers back on. Looks more bad ass anyways.

Think about it. Just cuz the UCAs are outa the way for normal driving doesn't mean they will for hard cornering or offroading...

I have stock rims with 1.5'' spacers on them and i am goin to run 33x12.5s next..

Just flexed out the front end. Stuffed each side and neither uca hit the tire. So for anybody reading this 4.5" is perfect for 285's. But now I have no idea wth the shuddering is coming from lol. The rub marks on the uca's must have been from the install.

ideally on a gen1, to run 285s you'll want ~3.5"BS for good clearance. look for other rubbing spots.

btw, do you want to sell your spidertrax spacers;).

3.5" bs is definitely not needed for 285's. Iirc JLee runs 3.75" with 33x12.50's...and actually recommends 4" BS with 12.50's. 3.5" bs on a 285 would also cause more rubbing on the fenderwells. Like I said 4.5" BS works good only rubbing I have is drivers side frame full lock...no biggie. Stuffed and wheel turned both directions resulted in no rubbing.

when the tire rubs on the uca, it's usually right where that shiny part is showing :D. slap the spacers on it tomorrow and drive it around the block and see if the shuddering stops.

hmmm... well i'm curious to find out too. by your description it does sound like it's definitely rubbing on something. hard braking and cornering compresses the suspension around so something is not happy.

What bs was you running? And I just said it doesn't touch the uca have you read what i been posting? Even if it did full lock that wouldn't result in the shuddering I feel. I wasn't Corning at full lock while doing 55mph. Or braking for that matter either.

have you gotten an alignment yet?

I still think you should run the spacers again..

Pulled into my house today and back left tire had a grinding noise. Took the center cap off and a lug nut came rolling out with the stud! Also the inside of the cap was filled with metal shavings. The whole tire moves back and forth after pushing on it. All the lugs are cross-threaded and aren't seated all the way! WTF Discount Tire!
