I don't think what gay people want or what the mlitary wants is the real question.
    The real question is:

    Do we want a military that is all about tolerance and understanding? or;
Do we prefer to have a military slanted toward half-crazy macho dudes with John Wayne complexes who want to kick ass?

A slight exaggeration, maybe, but I know which I want my country to have.
    Sorry girls.

Believe me .. there are plenty of Americans who don't understand it either. You can't make sense of the nonsensical.

One thing that makes this country great is the amount of freedoms we have and that the military has protected them. We were formed and will continue to be one nation under God.

If a gay person can do their job without bringing an axe to grind, or not further some political agenda, and contribute to their unit, I do not believe they should be banned. As long as they keep their homosexuality unto themselves.

That being said, there is no question homosexuality is immoral, unnatural, and not as God intended. I don't intend to change your beliefs, so please do not try to change mine.

Honestly, the US military has way bigger issues to deal with than the gays who have been serving all these years coming out. I highly doubt you will see gays walking into your work area and saying "I AM GAY!!".

Do not worry about it..until you have to. If it becomes an issue, deal with it like any other issue that comes up, professionally.

Key word Taco Gunner used: Professionally. Whether or not I agree with DADT, it's now become a moot point. The law has changed, and we have to act accordingly. I know many Marines who agree and disagree with the change, but it's up to us as professionals to act maturely and coexist. If a service member can't handle it, then they should move on.

As long as they do their job and don't flaunt it or try to push it on anyone who really cares? A hetero not doing his/her job is just as bad as a homo not doing his/her job in the millitary.

I wasn't sure until a few moments ago I was going to write this post, but here it goes:

This morning, I had a longtime friend and co-worker sit down in my office and we shot the shit for a bit as usual. He then tells me--out of the blue--he is gay and has been for some time. I was shocked to say the least. I've known this guy since 1999 and I thought I knew him pretty well (he was married when I first met him--now divorced). For the next couple minutes there was some awkward silence. He knew I wasn't a fan of the repeal. He and I sat in my office for the next 2 hours talking about him, his decision to tell me, and the overall issue. He was glad to be able to tell someone and that someone was me. Honestly, I was a bit moved by the whole episode (the reason I'm now compelled to write this post).

I have to admit, I may have been a bit premature in my judgment (I have posted here on this issue before). I still have religious differences with homosexuality--as is my right--however, I am still very proud to have known and served with this man--and still do. I applaud his courage to tell me and I respect him for it. I also respect him for a great number of reasons that have nothing to do with his sexual preference.

So, that being said, I can now state that I can gladly get over my prior reluctance with this repeal and serve willingly and proudly with homosexuals. I'm sure that most--as with most service-members in general--are hard working, dedicated performers. And that's all I care about. I don't care if they are gay or straight. In the end, any person that chooses to fight for their country and defend their fellow citizens--gay or straight--should have that right.

I do want to add that during our conversation, he and I both discussed a couple concerns I have had regarding the future of our Force. Turns out, he had the same:

    1) Will there be some future politically-correct effort to ensure gay men or women are elevated in position or rank above their straight peers, regardless of merit? Meaning, will their be some short-term effort to influence promotion or selection boards in favor of homosexual personnel in some misguided effort to quickly "level the playing field," or reduce potential complaints of perceived prejudice from the homosexual lobby? I have a feeling that within 2 years (and you can quote me on this), some public effort will be made to influence this process within the military.

    2) Will there be additional leverage placed on the military to accommodate additional demands of the homosexual lobby? As it stands, partners of gay personnel are not authorized dependent privileges because the Defense of Marriage Act is still the law of the land, as recognized by the DoD. So, until this law is deemed unconstitutional by our Supreme Court, the DoD, by law, may not extend benefits to those identified as "partners." So, what kind of pressure will be exerted on the DoD in the near term to either circumvent or pacify this dilemma?

As far as violence against gays in the military goes, I think this will be a non-issue. There may be an occasional incident between service members, but it will not be rampant or widespread. I think we can all act like adults and get along as if nothing has changed. And in actuality, really nothing has. Military members are remarkable well disciplined and will maintain their bearing even when things get heated.

Again, while I may have a sincere dislike with homosexuality--as is my right, and as is yours if you find it perfectly acceptable--I can work alongside homosexuals as equals. To be honest, I learned a little bit more about myself today.

FINAL THOUGHT: While reading these posts, there have been some very negative things said on both sides of this issue. At times, downright mean and unnecessary hurtful judgments against one another. What I think we all might want to take away from this is that in spite of our disagreements and personal feelings on the matter, we are all Americans (and some Canadians too). Regardless of our choices, lifestyles, and religious beliefs--however we arrive at them--we should offer a bit of respect for each other when we discuss these decidedly divisive issues. Just because I choose to believe one way and you maybe another, does not make either of us right in the other's eyes. These kinds of issues can be volatile and very personal opinions and thoughts tend to surface; sometimes, what surfaces is fairly ugly and immature.

I think we should remember, we are all individually influenced by a variety of factors and life experiences, and no two of us are exactly alike. That's what makes us human. If we were all alike, it would be a pretty dull world.

Bottom line, we all love our Tacos, and that's a pretty damn nice thing to share in common. Sorry for the length of this post. As you were.

They live here in the USA and you as a military man are sworn to protect all citizens of the USA. For the record: you are lacking valuable brain cells.
